Hi Robert, just read your post today as I got sidetracked with some holidays and such.  I went back and had a closer look at the 1901 census for Mabel Edith Black in Westmeath, Renfrew Co., ON and you have a point regarding the Wilfred Black listed in the family group.  This Wilfred shows up in later census entries as Wilfred Wilson, presumably taking on his mother's married name after marrying William Wilson on 24 Aug 1901.  I don't currently have a subscription for the Canadian Ancestry site but I expect to get a months subscription in the near future and I will see what I can find on his birth. I expect that there may be a connection for Wilfred to the Berggren family that his is living with along with his mother.

Also, Terry indicated that he though Hugh Black's father was also Hugh Black. You thought that Mabel's father Hugh and your great great grandfather might be brothers. Have you ever found anything to indicate your great great grandfather's dad was the same Hugh Black?

Thanks for the info.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Is there a test for me, and which company?

I guess I assume the question was related to using dna testing to find relatives, but based on your comments it would seem that only other UK relatives matter and the 100M  or maybe 200M?? people living outside the UK of british descent don't count as family....got it.

Thanks. I thought as much. Looks like he may have been orphaned or illegitimate or something.

My great grandmother Lily Rosina Smith was the daughter of George Smith (c.1863-1906) and Helena Meechum (c.1863-1911).  I have been able to get a fair amount on her mother's family (Meechum's) going back 3 or 4 more generations from family trees on ancestry but I haven't had much luck with her father's side or with any of the families of her siblings who stayed in England.

I'm interested in trying to trace back further on her father George Smith. In one census entry he is listed as being from Wiltshire (1891 Bisley) while in another he is listed as being from London (1901 Chalford).  His marriage record states he was a resident of Chalford and that his father was "Feliss Nullins????". I'm guessing the father's name was latin for something?

Any help or advise on trying to trace George back further is welcome. With a last name Smith, I understand it isn't going to be an easy thing.

Autosomal dna testing is great. I don't understand why people here would not see the use in it? If you are from England, as the poster seems to be, you will be able to match up with many of your relatives in England who have tested.  You will also match up with many of those branches of the family who emigrated. As the matches are good out to 4th or 5th cousins, you are talking about the same generation descendants as you of your 4th or 5th great grandparents.  You should have 64 or 128 of these ggrandparents (barring cousins who married in your ancestry) who lived ~1775-1825 or thereabouts depending on your particular circumstances.  That opens up many possible matches with branches who left to live in Canada, Australia, the US, NZ, SA etc. As a person from Canada for whom the majority of my ancestors emigrated to Canada around 1820-1840 from England, Ireland and Scotland, I anticipate matching up with many of those who test from the UK. It is definitely a numbers game so the majority of those testing come from the US but there are thousands like me who have also done the testing and count on folks from the UK to participate.  I believe that any of matches a person from the UK makes with those living outside the UK are even more useful as there is much greater likelihood of being able to zero in on the most likely place that the overlap occurs as I can tell you that with a diverse range of places that my ancestors came from, I can very likely tell you what part of my tree that your ancestry most likely connects with.  I'd encourange you to think again about doing a test. The prices have really come done, currently about $99US for the same test that cost me over $250US a few years ago.

Hi to all those interested in Hugh Black and his wife Elizabeth Tapper.  I have been trying to track down information on my wife's gg grandmother Mabel Edith Black for a long time. I had her marriage record from 1901 in Westmeath Twp, Renfrew County, Ontario Canada for a while but the parent names of Hugh Black and Elizabeth Tupper never turned up anywhere else.  From reading the posts on this site I understand now that she never emigratred with any of her direct family.  I am happy to discuss her family with those interested.
