Hello
Apologies I haven't used Rootschat in quite a long time as I've had no responses for a couple of years.
I would be interested in anything you can share on our common ancestors.

Hello John, I won't be helpful with burial places I'm sorry. All I have is some of their death certificates with place of death, but whether they are buried in the same area I don't know.  I don't currently have any death dates for Mary or Margaret, so I don't know if they married either.  I wonder if George Salmond remarried as it appears Janet died within weeks of their last son's birth in 1827. Janet is listed in the mortcloth register in Cambuslang, so possibly she is buried there.

Hello John, apologies for not replying sooner.  I haven't had contact from Rootschat for years so had basically given up and not logged on in quite a while.
I hope your trip to Glasgow in May was fruitful.  Yes Peter Salmond was my 3rd gr grandfather, George being my 4th.  Peter bought his second wife (Jane Boak Aitken nee Gartshore) and 3 sons to Australia in 1886, together with his orphaned granddaughter, my gr grandmother Jessie Haddow.  Her mother was Peter's daughter Janet Salmond who had married Thomas Haddow.  Jessie met and married another Scot, Donald Macdonald (from Angus) in Townsville Queensland Australia and married in 1888.  My grandmother Jane Gartshore Macdonald was the firstborn of the line in Australia in 1889.  One of Peter's sons - also Peter - had married a widow before coming to Australia. She coincidentally was the daughter of Peter Snr's 2nd wife.  She was also a Jane - Jane Aitken.  She had been married to a 'Tod' who had died.  Peter Jnr and Jane had four children, however all four children and Peter Jnr's wife died in Townsville and are buried in the West End cemetery there.  I believe not long after the family decided to go back to Scotland, however Jessie having married and started a family, they stayed in Australia.  I found my Peter Snr and his 2nd wife, Peter Jnr and Peter and 2nd wife's son William all back in Scotland in the 1901 census in Coatbridge.  The third son who had come to Australia - George - I have found no record of him going back, nor any record in Australia.  He had left the family in Queensland and travelled to Victoria as a newspaper advertisement looking for his whereaboutsw, last known in Werribee, Victoria was posted by Jessie.  My theory is they were looking for him to see if he wanted to go back to Scotland with the family, however I haven't been able to find him anywhere.  Peter's son William married Margaret McKerrall in 1909 and lived in Glasgow.  He and his wife don't appear to have had any children.  I have a postcard from  William to Jessie in WW1, as one of Jessie's sons, George William Salmond Macdonald joined the Australia Army with his future brother in law (my grandfather) George Stewart, another Scot from Moray.  William was looking forward to a visit from young George.  I hope this is helpful.  My tree is on Ancestry under Anne Stewart family tree.  Possibly the easiest way to find it is to search my grandmother Jane Gartshore Macdonald b 1889 Townsville Queensland Australia, died 1973 Townsville Queensland Australia.  Her husband was George Stewart b 1887 Lossiemouth Moray Scotland, died 1928 Townsville Queensland Australia.  If you search grandma's mother's line you will find my Salmonds.
Kind regards
Anne Keys nee Stewart

The 1851 census you mention has Elizabeth noted as Hamilton, 82 a widow, born Glasgow about 1869.

Colin
Yes Colin, 1769 - which is roughly the age I have her at.

You mention her son died in 1855, when and where was the death?

Colin
Hi Colin, he died at Braidwood Station, Carluke.  Others died later, others a lot earlier and some siblings I don't have deaths for.

Smellie/Smillie wasn't too common a name in Hamilton parish in the 19th century but, there is a gravestone, unfortunately it's only a marker stone, in Hamilton old parish churchyard which has the simple inscription "The burying place of Smellie Frame and family".
It's a start!
Thank you Lodger - that definitely is something

I've posted elsewhere on the forum today about my Smellie Hamilton puzzle.  I notice here Gartshore is also mentioned.  Haddow Hamilton Todd and Salmon(d) are my line.  Gartshore Boak and Smellie appear interwoven - Smellie appears to be tied up with Hamilton, and Gartshore and Boak are through my 3rd Gr grandfather Peter Salmond's second marriage to Jane Boak Aitken nee Gartshore.  After Thomas Aitken died, Jane married Peter Salmond who had formerly been married to Janet Forsyth.  One of Jane's daughters Elizabeth Aitken married Wiliam McIntyre and their daughter was Jane Gartshore McIntyre.  When my 3rd gr grandfather Peter Salmon and his second wife Jane Boak Salmond nee Aitken nee Gartshore brought my orphaned gr grandmother Jessie Haddow to Australia in 1886, she met and married an Angus Scot, Donald Macdonald in 1888.  Their firstborn was my grandmother Jane Gartshore Macdonald in 1889.  I was always told by Grandma that her middle name was given to her because of the midwife who delivered her.  I found that to be true on Grandma's Australian birth certificate.  However it was only after a lot of other research trying to untangle the web Peter Salmond had woven, that I then discovered that his second wife Jane Boak Salmond was also of course, my grandma's step gr grandmother.  Jane's other daughter - Jane Aitken had married a James Wilson Todd, but after his death, she went to live with her mother and Peter Salmond.  When the family came to Australia in 1886, there were two Jane Salmonds.  Peter Salmond's second wife Jane Gartshore Salmond, but also her daughter Jane Todd nee Aitken who married Peter's son Peter just before they came to Australia.  What a tangled web.  It was only when I discovered in census data ages had differed slightly for Peter's wife - and the name Janet had become Jane which I hadn't really concerned myself about, that I dug further and discovered Janet Salmond nee Forsyth had died and Janet hadn't become Jane - they were two different people.  When Peter's young Peter Salmond and his wife Jane Salmond nee Todd nee Aitken came to Australia they had 4 children, one being jane Gartshore Salmond.  Unfortunately all children died either within the first year of birth and the oldest Jane Garshore Salmond was only 4 when she died.  Their mother Jane Salmond nee Todd nee Aitken also then died and by 1901 census in Coatbridge, the Salmond family were back in Coatbridge - no doubt deeply distressed after the loss of 4 children and their mother.  My gr grandmother Jessie Haddow having married Donald Macdonald in 1888 stayed in Queensland, Australia and had 9 children between 1889 and 1904 -  only losing 1.  This won't help much with what you are all researching, but it seems to have been a small area and these names have intermingled quite a lot. If you see my other post and can help with Smellie and Hamilton it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Lanarkshire / Hamilton Smellie connection

Hello, I have been trying for years to find the death of my Elizabeth Haddow nee Hamilton (approx 1766-185?) who I believe died between 1851 and 1855.  She is deceased by her son's death in 1855 and I believe I have found her in an 1851 census with a Lillias Smellie in her 20s and William Smellie aged 2.  I believe William to be the son of Lillias McKay and James Smellie. Lillias appears to be the daughter of Donald McKay and Lillias McDonald.  I cannot find anything on James Smellie.  I do have a couple of Smellies in my tree - David Smellie and Jean Boak whose daughter was Elizabeth Smellie b 1804. I can't find any other children born to David and Jean and am wondering if maybe Jean Boak died and David had children with another woman and maybe James came from that union.  The closest Smellie name in my Hamilton offspring is John and Elizabeth's daughter Elizabeth Haddow Hamilton (1807-1870) who married Gavin McGhie in 1858, but had a child William Smellie Frame in 1850 to a person called Smellie Frame. I also can't find anything on Smellie Frame.  Probably grasping at straws there, but surely there has to be a link for Elizabeth Hamilton aged in her 80s to be living with 2 Smellies - Lillias in her 20s and William aged 2.  McKay and McDonald don't appear to have any links to my Hamilton and Haddows till many generations later - a Macdonald marrying a Haddow here in Australia - my gr grandparents.  Thanks for any insights.

Hi all, I am looking at a Smellie Hamilton connection at the moment and came across these posts.  I have an Elizabeth Grahame whose parents were James Graham and Margaret Smellie Gartshore. Margaret Smellie Gartshore diedin1883.She married Games Graham in 1857.  Her parents were George Gartshore and Elizabeth Smellie.  My connection to George and Elizabeth is through their daughter Jane Boak Gartshore 1826-1913.  Jane married Thomas Aitken and after his death, married my 3rd gr grandfather, Peter Salmond 1820-1901. They brought Peter's grand-daughter Jessie Haddow to Australia in 1886 where she met and married an Angus fellow, Donald Macdonald 1863-1945.  Their first daughter born in Australia was Jane Gartshore Macdonald.  I had been told 'Gartshore' was given to my grandmother as her middle name after the midwife who delivered her, and her birth certificate states as such, however it was after a lot of searching of the Salmond connection that I discovered this second marriage and how she was actually my grandmother's step-gr grandmother as well as being the midwife who delivered her.  Why I am researching Smellie, is that my Haddow line is through John Haddow and Elizabeth Hamilton, their son David, his son Thomas and then my gr grandmother Jessie Haddow who married Donald Macdonald.  I have not been able to find Elizabeth Hamilton's marriage to John, nor her death.  I know she died prior to 1855 as she is 'deceased' on David's death in 1855, however I believe I found her in an 1851 census living with Lilias Smellie and what appears to be her young son William Smellie.  I believe Lilias was actually Lillias McKay and William is the son of James Smellie.  I cannot find anything at all on James Smellie to see where the connection to Elizabeth Hamilton may be.  Lillias' parents were Donald McKay and Lillias Mcdonald 1794-1861.  Hope this helps somewhat with the Gartshore line.
