Hopefully you may recognise someone ?
A part of my dads family had a drift mine for coal at Elsdon and my dad worked there a while too.
I will of course get all the pics promised on the web as soon as i speak to our Web designer.
Or, thinking about it, i can post on our forum myself.
So will do that very soon

John

Morpeth is just outside from Scotland Gate, Choppington in Northumberland.
Elliot is a name associated with Morpeth tho.
There is the Elliot Bridge.
Maybe someone can assist you in your search.
Best of luck

Hazel i went to school at Scotland Gate and got grand-kids there now.
However, before Mrs Blyth took over as head, i visited the old headmaster then. Now he let me and a fellow friend with a keen interest in our locality, read the old school record books as i was interested in the Zeppelin Raid during WW1 at Choppington. I saw the comments on it and really enjoyed some early reports on other matters concerning the school. This was about 1999.
Now when he retired i only assume he took all the records with him. Mrs Hilda Blyth aint seen them. I wonder if he donated them to the archives ?
If not i may chase this up if he is alive or indeed any family and see if i can find out. They were so interesting. There was lots of old school pics too, but sadly none for my years there. Maybe contact some of my old school friends for class pics as my parents couldnt afford them. Just got the odd one of me and me brother at school.

Northumberland / Re: Where was Sheepwash church? Near Guide Post.

Interesting topic this and one i know much of.
The Rectory actually had a church to the rear of it. You had to go up the outside stairs to enter.
I have also refered it to a place of worship by the monks who lived there.
There was also an ancient hospice at Sheepwash. No one knows where it was, however, i can say i believe i know the location as many years ago i came across this beautiful flooring that was decorated buried a little under the earth.
I recon that was it.
I was born at Scotland Gate and i am a historian and secretary of the Sixtownships Community History Group, and have researched that area beginning at the age of 14. I am now 58, so a good few years at it i recon.
There was also a tunnel running from the Rectory to Bothal and it exited at the rear of the waterfall.
The monks burial ground was found acoss the road near the river on Glebe Farm land when they began building the houses now there. They came across the remains of many monks.
I actually saw the church to the rear of the Rectory and know of someone who also had a keen interest in the Rectory and wanted to see the building listed.
It was refused and when sold as Mr and Mrs Grey were the last to live in it, they pulled it to bits and
the small church to the rear was a victim.
What a disgrace that was.
As a kid i went to many garden fetes they held there and enjoyed it. A small orchard in the rear, along with coconut shys etc. Happy days.
Lots of history in it.
I can also say that Bothal Haugh Rectory was built along the Morpeth Road, next to the kennels. That was for the vicar, as he refused to live in the Rectory as he wanted to build his very own
place to live. When he built it he didn't realise it would not last long as the timbers, wood, inside was riddled with woodworm and the building demolished in the late 50s.
Have a look on our website, many pics and stories for your interest on it.

Hi. This is for pityackerfromblyth.
You talked about PC Mussell.
His full name was George Bertram Mussell.
He was killed along with Sgt. Andrew Barton on April 15th 1913.
The incoming landlady Sara Grice was also murdered there.
So all three murdered by John Vickers Amos at the Sun Inn public house in Bedlington.
I researched the murders over many years and have a vast ammount of archive material relating to this tragic event.
Our group, and i am secretary has put a vast ammount on line at www.sixtownships.org.uk and have yourself a look there.
I am also interested in George Mussell so any information you would like to share would be nice.
There is a forum on our website too.
Look forward to hearing from you.

For the user who began this topic.
Scotland Gate, Choppington, got its name as in the old days the farmers had names for their fields.
Now when they came to build the field was called "Scotland" and hense the gateway to "Scotland"
Scotland Gate.
I am a historian born at 61 East Gate, Scotland Gate, my grandparents house, and as you would expect have a vast ammount of interest in Choppington.
I am also the secretary of the Sixtownships Community History Group and at our website www.sixtownships.org.uk you can find so much about Choppington and many more ares including Bedlington, Tyneside, Durham and more. There is also a forum . Have a look and there are many pics too. Enjoy and if you need any help l;et me or the members know, only too pleased to help.
