Oh, he died in Congleton?  How do I go about finding his father?  Will his father be listed as Maffits in Ireland?

Sorry, am new to all this - is really difficult! x

Thanks everyone, that's a really great help.  Funnily enough I stumbled across the Maffits and discounted it ... I didn't know who a lot of the people were (with different surnames).  Am I right to assume that James died in Ireland and didn't make it over to England.  Will his death be registered under the name of Maffits or would it be as Moffatt?

Thanks

Lisa :)

I'm really confused. I've hit a brick wall.

My great, great (or how many other greats) was Samuel Moffat (born 1849 in Ireland and moved to Congleton).  He married Ellen Davenport (born 1849 in Bradwell, Cheshire).

I believe the parents are James and Jane but I have no other information. I don't have a maiden name for Jane - and James I'm clueless about James as it doesn't appear he came over to England.  He might have died or something?  Can someone help me ...

I really appreciate your help :)

Thanks

Lisa

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Can anyone read this please?

Hi I need help with the handwriting on this old document please?

I took a look at your document and deciphered it as William and Sarah Marler.  I wonder if you had any luck in finding out more information - was it indeed Maker?

Can I ask the date of the documents and where the marriage took place as some of my relatives were both Sarah and William Marler (married).

Thanks

Lisa

Warwickshire / John Marler 1777-1851 and Helah Allsop 1781-1871

I was wondering if anyone could lend me some assistance.

The above folks are in my father's family line and I believe Abraham and Mary were John's parents.  I have no other information of birthdates, where they were from etc, only to say that John was born in Wilnecote, Warwickshire.  I'm trying to find out if John had any brothers / sisters etc, but am unsure how I will go about finding this information given the earliest census is 1841.

Any help you can offer will be most appreciated.

Kind regards

Lisa :)

Thanks all, you were on the right track and helped lots and lots.  I tracked the Moffat's right back to Samuel Moffat (1849) and Ellen Davenport (1849) and got stumped again.  I could go further back with Ellen but became unstuck with Samuel.  My Dad always told me there was a Scottish bloodline but I can't seem to find it.  I came across a Samuel from Congleton who was originally from Ireland and I wondered if there was a connection there somewhere?

Hi Heather

I know for sure that Sydney, Eva, Lily, Samuel, Frances, James were all her kiddies - I've never heard of Roy or Jonathan?  How would I find out their Dad's name (my great grandfather?).

Thank you so much for your help :)
