Many thanks for all your very helpful  suggestions. He was a  carpenter who eventually went on to run his own timber merchant business... so maybe he did run into some money through a legacy. Difficult to say with any certainly that he did nor did not fall out with his family.... but I just have a hunch that he wasn't estranged as all his children has the name Cairns as a middle name. It is the James Cairns Wright who married Sarah Downs.
I think he made up his father's name(of James Cairns Wright) on his own marriage certificate as his father was James Cairns in the 1771 census and on his (James Cairns 1819) death certificate. His mother's death certificate is also under the name Cairns..... so I am inclined to be thinking that his parents had not changed their names.

Family History Beginners Board / Why Did James Cairns change his surname to Wright?
« on: Saturday 14 March 15 23:59 GMT (UK)  »
Why my 2x g grandfather changed his surname from Cairns to Wright has been a mystery in our family. I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
He was born at Wester Balado, kinross in 1853. He was not living with his parents by the 1871 census and when he got married in Bo'ness in 1877 he had already changed his surname to Wright. Family folklore has it that he was a conscientious objector/ absconded from the army. I don't have any proof to support that. Does anyone know where I could look? Many thanks

Fife / Re: Tracing PHILP/PHILLIPS from Fife

My 5x G grandmother is a Lucy Philp. I haven't been able to find an exact birth date but probably around 1774 in or around the St Monance/Monans area. She married William Wilson in St Monance in 1809. I am descended through their daughter Janet. I haven't been able to get any further back through "Family Search"or ScotlandsPeople than Lucy- although I appreciate that records before that were not that robust. Any suggestions most welcome.

Fife / Re: Renton family

I'm not sure if I'm looking for the same Renton family....but I am looking for a Renton family in Fife and it is quite an unusual name. My x g grandfather was a Thomas Renton and married Janet Wilson in St Monance in1837. the marriage info states that he was from the nearby Carnbee. i think he possibly  died before the 1841 census but I can't find any information on that or where his family came from. If  anyone has any suggestions- I'd be very grateful as I'm completely stuck!

Hello,
I've recently been looking into my family connections to Dunblane. My gg grandfather was James Cairns Wright who was married to Sarah Downs. My Mum has recently given me copies of old photos which I will get scanned at some point soon. One is a super photo of the wedding of Evelyn to Alexander McGregor and has James and his wife Sarah.  I'm sure one of the children in the photo is likely to be Winnie. There is a possibility that one of the adults is also Margaret.

I am very happy to share once I have the ability to send private messages.

Has your branch of the family any idea why he added "Wright" after the "Cairns"?
