There are a number of family trees on Ancestry which provide a host of information on William. I have been able to send an email to one of the tree holders - the one showing most information on William.

Thanks. I had a look at that tree and I think it's pretty inconclusive. I couldn't see a link to any email address to attempt o make contact with the tree holder but thanks for doing so

I'm not sure I am connected. I could be, but don't know for certain. Do you know if there are any available records for the Sydney 'area' which would confirm a death?

The 1922 Marriage certificate has him named as 'William Edwin Ernest'

I'm certain that the 3 christian names are correct. There were given to me by the Guild of One Named Studies, as they appear on a marriage certificate to Dorothy May Millard in Frome, Somerset in 1922. On that certificate 'gunner 1025197 RAMC' appears which I assume is something to do with the military. Maybe, after or during the war, he was posted out there and remained after the war. Maybe, there is a connection - a distant one

I know very little. I'm not even sure that he died in Sydney, let alone died there in 1957

That would appear to be them. That all ties together in pieces and would appear to suggest that John (refer to as Jnr) was baptised at St. Mary in Lambeth on 30th Aug 1840, marries Elizabeth Willis in 1863, marries Rose Lavinia at an unknown date, and is living with his daughter Rose and son-in-law in 1911. In addition, there is a John (refer to as Snr) who marries Mary New on 19 Aug 1838 in St George's, Camberwell. There is  also a John Francis living with a John Perkins on the 1991C, listed as stepson, and Mary - yet unidentified - could be connected, somehow. Lots of questions still and loads to go in search of. For now, thank you to you all and your marvelous skills

That 1901C entry would seem to be that for John (jnr) and John (jnr, jnr) wouldn't it?
