I found William Whitehair recorded in 1876 New York City passenger lists (1820-1957) on Findmypast over the weekend and a record in the same year for Illinois Northern District Naturalisations (1820-1957).I also found an entry for a newspaper to suggest that he was part of a committee to have a memorial of some kind raised for Roger O'Connor. As his first wife ( mother of Amanda) was Irish i thought that this might be of interest.

I can't point to the records for this but i understand from my father, his great grandson, that William Russell Whitehair did emigrate to America because he was wanted as a Chartist activist, leaving his wife and children. His wife received one letter saying he was in Chicago but heard noting else. Until I saw your posts, it was thought that he had died in the Chicago fire. If you have found anything else about this i would be grateful. He had a son, William, in who i am particularly interested, thanks.
