Sligo / Mongans from Co Sligo
« on: Tuesday 10 January 06 19:28 GMT (UK)  »
I know this is a long shot but...........
I was wondering if anyone had any listings for the surname MONGAN in their family tree's, originating from Co Sligo. I am researching a Mongan line in Co Mayo, who emigrated to the US and I was contacted by a fellow researcher in the US who is trying to trace his gg grandfather who came from Co Sligo, so I offered him any assistance in the matter (seeing as he is going to continue my search in the US).

The elusive Mongan we are looking for is a Dennis Mongan, born in Co Sligo somewhere in the 1770's. He emigrated to the US around 1800 and did what every Irish person was told to do in the Bible - "go forth, multiply, fill the earth and conquer it". There are hundreds of descendants originating from this Mongan line in present day US.

So if anyone has come across a Mongan (or it could be spelt Mangan, Mongey, Manghan etc.,) in their Co Sligo family tree's or if you have come across a birth record for Dennis Mongan - please let me know.
Many thanks in advance for your help.

Mayo / Re: Mc Cann family from Kilclare
« on: Sunday 02 October 05 23:24 BST (UK)  »
Do you have any further information regarding the Rush family? There were quite a few families in this village named Rush and McCann and its a process of elimination as to who they are. I am originally from the next village to Culclare and know of at least three McCann families from Culclare and about five Rush families from same village ( there are no McCanns left but there are two Rush families there).  There is one family whom my mother remembers an Ellen and a James in, but they were living up to the 1970's. If you had any further info prior to that e.g. 1940's I might be able to shorten the list.

Cavan / BOYLAN - Cloonoose, Ballyhealan
« on: Monday 12 September 05 21:37 BST (UK)  »
Trying to trace ancestry of Owen Boylan (my g grandfather) born Cloonoose, Ballyhealan (born date unknown, died approx 1941-1945).
I found listings for  James Boylan and Thomas Boylan of Cloonoose in the Griffiths Valuation of 1856 but unsure whether they are related to me. Apart from that have hit a brick wall.
From talking to relatives I know we are related to O'Reilly's, Brady's, Wilson's and Maguires (somehow) but understand that these surnames are of numerous occurence in the area!!
If anyone can find any birth, marriage or death records related to Owen Boylan it would be of great interest to me!!
Many thanks in advance for any help.

Wexford / Captain John Kelly - Killann
« on: Wednesday 07 September 05 20:04 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering if anybody has carried out research on the family tree of Captain John Kelly of Killann (as in the famous song "Kelly the boy from Killann).
I have been told that we are related to him and I have managed to trace back to my great great grandmother (Anne Kelly) but cannot make the link back to John Kelly. I am related through the Breen line of Old Ross and have been told that my family and the Kelly family share the family grave in Killann.
If anybody could throw any light on this, I would be most grateful.

Hi
I am trying to find where Patrick Rush was born. He was born about 1838.In  the 1881 British census says he was born Mayo county. His wifes name was Bridget Meeghan. I think they were married about 1860ish. All a bit vague but it's all I have.
Thanks
Phil.

I have checked listings for kilmovee parish records and found the following:

1860
17 January
Martin Rush married a Bridget Meeghan
Witnesses:  William Meeghan/ ? Hopkins
No townlands listed in the above record.

May be of some use to you. But as I have found  - that sometimes you can be lead up the wrong path with records!!
Best of luck

Hi there.
Thanks for the above information although the name of Martin and not Patrick has stumped me for now. Will have to look into it.
Many thank's
Phil.

More listings of children for Martin Rush/Bridget Meeghan - marriage info as above:
1.  Domnick, born 4 Aug 1861 (sps Thomas Tully, Catherine Meeghan - Magheraboy)
2.  Maria - born 5 Dec 1863 (sps Martin Meeghan, Bridget Meeghan - Magheraboy)
3.  William - born 7 July 1866 (sps Margaret Meeghan, Thady Coffey - Magheraboy)
4.  Catherine - born 26 Sept 1869 (sps Domnick Rush, Bridget Molloy - Magheraboy)
5.  Bridget - born 14 July 1871 (sps William Meeghan, Bridget Meeghan - Magheraboy)
6.  Martin - born 25 Nov 1876 (sps William Rush, Mary McCann - Magheraboy)
7.  Thomas - born 6 Oct 1878 (sps not listed)

The Rush name was very prominent in Magheraboy 100-150 years ago, so most likely all households were related way back. Maybe some of the names might ring a bell with you? Also, family could have emigrated and further children born in the UK? I have been caught out with census' before as I have found that some of my ancestors told little white lies regarding their age etc., (think they were playing things close to their chest). My g grandfather knocked 15 years off his real age during the 1901 census in Ireland!!
