If you are in Australia, you can access the irishnewspaper database on-line for free with a readers card from the National Library of Australia.  It's not quite as user friendly as our wonderful Trove, but I've found lots of useful information for my Irish research.

Armed Forces / 16th Lancers in India 1890's
« on: Saturday 21 September 13 06:37 BST (UK)  »
I have my grandfathers service record.  He enlisted in 16th Lancers in 1889, serving in India from 1890-1897.  I believe they were stationed at Lucknow.  From what I have been able to find, they didn't see any action during this period.  So what I would like to know is what did they actually do during this time?  Can anyone suggest any sources, books, diaries or anything else which may give some information?  I have been in touch with the Queens Royal Lancers museum, and they have been unable to help.  Would appreciate any suggestions.

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / Re: Patrick GAVIN
« on: Monday 29 July 13 04:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Dianna,
I'm also looking into Patrick Gavin and his family.  Patrick & Mary are my husband's 3x great grandparents.  I have been a bit stumped as the shipping records give their place of origin as Barrowstown, co Kildare, and there is no such place that I can find in Kildare.  I have been looking at the Tithe Applotment Books to try and find any trace of the Gavin, Burns, Lane or Tobin families in a small area.  Your post alerted me to his baptism in Carragh, which I had overlooked.
All 4 family names are represented in the parish of Carragh in the Tithe Books (1820's - 1830's).
The other clue is that Patrick's nieces, Bridget & Catherine, who travelled to Australia with them have their place of origin as Thomastown, which is also in parish of Carragh.
Have you done any research into Catherine or Bridget?  I have identified possible marriages for both of them in the NSW records, and it is possible that these certificates or their death certs may provide clues on the name of their father (Patrick's brother)
If I come up with anything else, I will get back to you.
Katrina

Clare / Re: 19th and 20th century newspapers from Clare - online?
« on: Monday 01 July 13 04:57 BST (UK)  »
Hi, a couple of suggestions for you.
1. As you are in Australia, you can join the National Library of Australia, and with your library card, you can access the Ireland newsarchives.  Normally this is a subscription site, but access is free via NLA on-line resources.  Unfortunately, it doesn't have the Clare newspapers, but references to Clare people do come up in papers from surrounding areas.
2. NLA hold Clare Journal on microfilm, which you can borrow via inter-library loan through your local library.  You would need access to a microfilm reader (I had to go to local university library for this), and it is a tediously slow process.  Would be quicker if you knew approximate date range to narrow your search.
3. Limerick city have online obituaries from 1831 onwards from the Limerick Chronicle.  Unfortunately, they only index the ones actually from Limerick, so you would need to manually scroll through to find any of the many Clare entries.  These are at: http://www.limerickcity.ie/Library/LocalStudies/ObituariesdeathnoticesetcfromtheLimerickChronicle/
Hope this is of some help to you.

Clare / Re: Healy and Pyne families carrigaholt

Hi Karen,  Don't know if you are still active on this forum, but I may have a little bit to add to your search for Healy family.
I have a diary written by my great-uncle Fred Pilkington in 1904 while living at Kiltrellig. His entry for Tuesday 13 September 1904 records: "The poor Healies cleared out of Kilbaha this morning,  They go to settle in Liverpool.  A brake from Kilkee took the family away."
The 1901 census for Kilbaha lists Eliza Healy 61 widow, farmer/housekeeper, daughter Lizzie 27 unmarried, seamstress, & grandchildren George Willis age 10 & Winifred Willis age 5.  The family are recorded as Church of Ireland.
Winifred & George Willis appear in the 1911 census in Liverpool, living with their parents (also Winifred & George) and numerous other siblings.
Hopefully this will be of some assistance, if you see it.
