Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / Re: PICKETT - Witney, Cogges, Southleigh, Newland
« on: Tuesday 29 November 16 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
Good morning to you from a beautiful sunny frosty Oxfordshire...Reference your PICKETT family...I am part way through a write up of the PICKETT/HARRIS family tree...I have started entering the HARRIS portion onto Ancestry UK...The PICKETT family are still being hand written and a bit of early research to do from Oxfordshire Parish Records..RICHARD PICKETT (1806-1886),, I have his family back to 1685..RICHARD and WILLIAM (1807) were brothers..WILLIAM is the 3X great grandfather of my nephew in law who's tree I'm doing at present...If you would like some more info ,,only to glad to assist...Contact me via Ancestry on WATERS/SALMON/MERRY/BUSBY family tree...Look for HENRY CHARLES WATERS (1869)...  So far I have got about 75/80 pages of written text on the PICKETT family...Your very welcome to what ever you need...Looking forward very much indeed for your reply...Regards....LES  (the Oxfordshire Cockney)....

HI " COUSIN "...  I forwarded the shop address a while ago OK??  I contacted the Jewish newspaper ""Jewish Chronicles"" as I heard about them on BBC program "Heir Hunters"..They record all births deaths and marriages of every Jew in UK..The problem was their records only start in 1841,,same as the census returns..Oh Well!!!  They did give me a clue as to Jewish surnames... LEVIE/LEVY/LEVIEN/LEVIN/JUDALIEB are all definitions of the same name..It all depends on where they were born and which district as well...In Warsaw,,Poland for example there are 6 different Jewish districts,,each has a different spelling of the same name..The family records in Poland are so complicated to understand they recommended I don't go there..HE WILL SHOW UP ONE DAY---WON'T YOU Mr MOSS??  Where for art thou Moss?? Are you receiving me--Over...   Regards...LES.

Hello Theresa from lovely Oxfordshire..On Rootschat I am Oxfordshire Cockney but my real name is LES...Moss Levin b 1768 ?? (age taken as death recorded in 1842)..He was my 2X great grandfather and his daughter Kate (Kitty) mrd my great grandfather William Montague Glenister (eventually Chief Constable of Hastings...Moss was a silversmith by trade and had a shop in a small street off the Strand in London..My brother found this out and a couple of years ago found the shop..It is still a silversmith's..They ,,like Moss,,had no personal silver mark,,they made things for other silversmiths on short contracts...I will ask brother to sort out address of shop and send it on OK???  We have no definite answers to his birth place but we believe he was a Russian/Polish Jewish immigrant who came (with his family) to London from Hamburg (Germany) in about 1780..I have been in touch with Richmond Surrey Synagogue ,,as he lived in Richmond,,but the building was destroyed by fire and all early records lost..They only have records from about 1952..We have been searching for about 15 years for Moss information...Soon as we have anything I'll let you know...I don't mind you having my email address--  (*)        Regards...LES.

Good evening from a lovely Oxfordshire..Moss Levin 1768 to 1842 was my 2X great grandfather..His daughter Kate (Kitty) mrd my Great Grandfather William Montague Glenister who became chief constable of Hastings Sussex..  Moss Levin was a silversmith and had a shop in a road off The Strand in London.. My brother has been to see the shop and it's still a silversmith's..We have been trying for years to locate more details on him..Bruv has contacted Richmond Surrey Synagogue but their records don't go back that far as earlier records were lost in a fire..We are led to believe his family arrived in London docks about 1780/83 from Hamburg Germany..This is where a lot of Russian/Polish Jewish immigrants departed from to USA as well as UK...If only we could find the passenger arrivals for that period we may find where he was actually born....Keep looking..I'm 85 now so only 15 years before my 100 not out to find him in...Can I make it???   Regards...LES.

Hello Sarah from sunny but cold Oxfordshire...I have just contacted Sue re Pickett family in Oxfordshire....If I can help you in any way then please contact me...The main problem is the Picketts were Methodist and don't appear in the Oxfordshire Parish Records...Very few districts have a Non-Conformist register...Regards....LES.

Hello Sue.....Lovely surprise to get your reply....I have about 70 pages (all handwritten) on the Pickett family...The only problem is,,how do I get it to you??? You said you'd sent your email address to me but ROOTS-CHAT cancelled it out and said no personal messages allowed...Surely if it's involving the Pickett family tree that's not personal?? It's to do with the topic under discussion....This may get rejected as well in that case....Are you with Ancestry??? We could do Family tree communication through there....Anyhow for a try here's my email address...I have no problems at all about this being published on any site to do with Family Trees....Regards...LES.
