Herefordshire Resources & Offers / City of Hereford 1600s & 1700s
« on: Sunday 17 October 21 22:17 BST (UK)  »
I have a large collection of info re City of Hereford families 1600 to 1799. If you have any City of Hereford ancestors 1600 to 1799, I can probably help you with your research (no charge, of course). Hoping that you will add to my collection. I live in City of Hereford & have easy access to the Herefordshire Archives.
Hoping to hear from you soon. Sunday, 17 Octoer 2021. Jean of Hereford (full name Jean Lynette Doson).

Tom,

Assuming that James Davies & Susannah Davies (nee Jones) were still alive at the time of the 1851 Census, what were their ages & their places of birth?

I'm still wondering whether both or either of them were "genuinely" City of Hereford people.

hello Tom,

Today, I was at the Hereford Cathedral Library – which has the original Marriage Register for St John the Baptist – covering the year 1820.

Unfortunately, the Marriage Register in 1820 did not include the sort of information which you were hoping for – e.g. no details of parents. The entry reads –

James Davis of this parish & Susannah Jones of this parish were married in this church by banns this 29 October 1820 by me Christopher Jones, officiating minister.
The mark of James Davis (x)
The mark of Susannah Jones (x)
In the presence of George Davis (x) & Thomas Hall (s)

There were no other details.

If you need another look-up, just let me know. I don’t mind doing it for you.

I’m interested in any of the inhabitants of the City of Hereford from the 1500s to 1851.

hello Phil,

I’ll do the searches for you during the one week in August when the Hereford Record Office is open.

I see from the Hereford Marriage Index that John Holliday & Mary Beddington married by licence – rather than by banns. It is almost certain that the Marriage Licence was issued by the Diocese of Hereford – so the Marriage Licence Bond should be at the Hereford Record Office. In August, I will have a look at it for you.

Did you know that the surnames of Holliday & Beddington were extremely uncommon in Herefordshire.

Herefordshire Marriage Index 1700 to 1837
Halliday / Holliday grooms – 5.
Halliday / Holliday brides – 2.
Beddington / Biddington grooms – 3.
Beddington / Biddington brides – 4.

The earliest Holliday groom was Charles Holyday who married Elizabeth Thomas at Walford on 30 May 1714.
The earliest Beddington bride was Sarah Beddington who married Thomas Shergoole at Tedstone Delamare in 1785.

Perhaps the Holliday & Beddington families have their origins in Worcestershire.

hi Chris,

Thanks for the reply.

I would be greatly interested to have anything you have on William Carpenter, schoolmaster, & sons, of the City of Hereford.

For my own interest, I will have a look for information to supplement what you have - and would be happy to send to you anything that I find.

hello John,

Tonight, I happened to read your request (made 5 years ago) re Pilley.

As Pilley was such a very uncommon name in Herefordshire, I’m wondering whether you are descended from Mr William Pilley (died at Holme Lacy, aged 64 years in 1832) and / or James Pilley (enrolled at the Bluecoat School in the city of Hereford in 1838).

Although the Pilley Collection of Documents is well-known, I had not given any thought to who the Pilley family were.

I’d be interested to hear about your Pilley ancestors of Herefordshire.

Tonight, I read your posting of 2008 re two generations of men named William Carpenter - one of whom was a schoolmaster at the Bluecoat School.

As I live in the City of Hereford, I would be most interested to know more about William Carpenter, the schoolmaster.

In return, I would be happy to do a few look-ups at the Hereford Record Office. Mind you, I must point out that the record office opens for only one week in each month - as they are preparing to move to a new building. The next week of opening is in August.

from the Herefordshire Marriage Index:
John Holliday m. Mary Beddington at Whitbourne on 6 August 1792.

These days, the Hereford Record office opens for only one week each month - as the staff are preparing for a move to a new building. The week for July has passed. The next week of opening is in August.

So, I could do look-up your queries in August - if you would like me to do so.

I’d be interested to know the baptism details of George Pember – who was in the City of Hereford in 1800.

I see from the Hereford Journal of 13 August 1800, that George Pember and several other men were convicted & sentenced to death for sheep-stealing. Luckily, he was reprieved.

I presume he met with success in Australia.
