Hi rosie99/jim1
Many thanks for your valuable info.I seem to recollect that the family goes back to James axon who was supposedly a gunner in the napoleonic war however there seems to be some suggestion that he was based in Walmer castle. As you have both suggested I need to go back to basics and take it from there.axon is not a common surname which does indeed seem to originate from the Cheshire area.
Many thanks again,I will keep you posted

Hi Rosie 99,many thanks for (and others) for your very prompt reply to my questions re William axon.I have so far found William serving under a captain Joseph Darrel in 1780 and was captured by the British and held on the Torbay in 1781.There is also a Samuel Jacob Axon (ships surgeon) who was also taken prisoner in Charlston. The story of the schooner Packhorse is also interesting as it seems this vessel was also used as a prison ship. There is also a Richard F Axon who fought the British on Jhons island near Charleston, most were killed and prisoners taken onboard the Packhorse which was ordered north for prisoner exchange, the prisoners (135) took over the vessel and headache for Halifax and eventually tertuned home.
A fascinating story which I am completely confused by. I hope to establish a connection to the axons of Deal and Walmer
Thanks
