Family History Beginners Board / Bentalls family archive
« on: Monday 31 August 15 19:07 BST (UK)  »
My grandfather Alfred 'Mac' McDonald (1910-1989) worked for Bentalls at Kingston for 50 years. This was commemorated on a board that used to be on one of the floors. Other members of the family including his wife, son and daughter also worked in the store at one time or another.

I have been in touch with the current owners of Bentalls who advise me that the archives are now held by the Bentalls family. I am keen to find out more about the role my grandfather performed in his 50 years and therefore need to track down someone within the Bentalls family.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the replies. I have the birth certificate and regrettably the father is blank. I must reiterate that I am trying to trace the father who paid the alimony not the husband who divorced the mother because of the affair while he was away at war.

I am unsure to what court would hold the case papers for the 1940's or whether they would have been transferred to an archive.

Thank once again.

Family History Beginners Board / Alimony payments in the 1940's
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 18:43 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if there is anyone that can advise me or point me in the right direction please. I am researching a family where a mother was divorced in 1947 following an affair while her husband was away at war, whereby a child was born in 1943 in Woking, Surrey.
The child does not know the name and her mother, who dies in 1968, did not talk about him. He was not named in the divorce papers.
It is believed that her mother received alimony following a court case, as the affair ended badly. Does anyone know where I can find the records for the court case for the 1940's?
Thank you

Hi Pam

Sorry to be a nuisance but I nearly forgot about your kind response to my enquiry re the Still family and wondered if you are still happy to share it?

I am looking forward to learning so much more about the family and my heritage.

Regards and best wishes

Nick

Hi
Many tanks for your reply. It appears that my James Bullen married a Mary Jackman in 1798, so it looks as though does not fit in with your family. Shame.

Thanks once again I for your response.

Hi to you all

I hope you can assist.

I have recently commenced researching my Bullen connection. I have discovered that my 4th x GG was James Bullen (1782 - 1867) born in Ockham to John Bullen (1755 - 1832) and Jane Farley (1758  - 1831).

My query is thus. With the extensive research you have already carried out on the Bullens does my ancestors from Ockham fit into your family / families?

I would appreciate your views. Thank you for taking the time to read.

Regards

Nick

Hi Pam

Many thanks for replying.

It appears that my family converges with the Still when Mary Still marries Richard Shoebridge in 1630 in Cowden. I am therefore keen to learn about the Stills as I understand they are an old Kent family.

Regards

Nick
