That's Thomas alright- my paternal Great-grandfather. Why he's listed in the Edinburgh Gazette heaven only knows.

Still no success with 1921 census mentions of Thomas and Mary Pemberton but will continue to search as Thomas and Mary were definitely in Crewe and in the areas pf the town that they were long associated with.

Thanks for the map and newspaper references regarding Alice St corner shop. I'm still checking them out.  The map is proving tricky to study but will progress as these are useful references-thanks again.

Doesn't help with the shop, however Alice Street appears on this 1908 map (top near the middle), off Richard Moon St. It appears to become West Ave on the other side of Samuel St.

Mary, not Alice, Pemberton.I haven't accessed census 1921 (nor 1911) successfully as yet.
