For Sale / Wanted / Events / Early Triumph motorcycle IMAGES wanted please
« on: Friday 11 December 09 15:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Am looking to complete a social commentary related to my archive of early Triumph photographical images....a book of around 200 images that glimpse the early years of the C20th. Am seeking ( with gratitude) early motorcycle images particularly Triumphs between 1903 and 1920. Early pioneers, WW1 dispatch riders or even family adventurers.
Many thanks
Lyndon

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Re: Stedman - Surrey
« on: Friday 11 December 09 15:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
Worsfold and Stedman are both Woking and Old Woking names going back hundreds of years. There must be some links to the town, even now and interestingly their fortunes are very very diverse. The Surrey History Centre, based at Woking (Goldsworth Rd) would be a very good reference point for you. Even seeking local trade gazettes for reference.
Good luck

Hi there
I agree with the previous observer regarding rhubarb but initially I had wondered whether there was a creature being held below like a polecat or a ferret. In the background there seems to be evidence of organised planting.....alotment type ground. Could the background be 'Sugarloaf' Mt close to Abergavenny and not too far from Brecon. It looks like early 1920s and both men have matching 'Dai' caps ...far more common in the valleys than hats.
Best regards

Hi there
They are fairly mature for the time, to have married. As he is promoted do you not think it may be a picture prior to shipping out somewhere?
Best wishes

Hello there
Definitely St Martin in the Fields and certainly not the beginning of the century. Policeman's uniform must be a clue ( sorry can't help much with that) but the bicycle is 1920s as are the clothing styles.

Hi there
To get the most from these fabulous images you have to look at them side by side. If your dates are right and they are certainly early photographs, they are important and should be recorded at some heritage centre. Remember that the 1880s were not known for snapping all over the place unless you were very rich or on tour.....and these could just be earlier.
Also there are a few years apart; not too many but certainly three or more with the first having a look of the sea and also the wild west. The huge noticable item is the change in hats and I would suggest that it is fashion rather than season or need.
Also of note, the watches in the later picture ( possibly overseers)
.......and the clothes ( some still wearing same)
.......and a few family relations I would suggest.
.......Look at how the facial hair has diminished and the grey has whitened.
.......The wheels on the carriers are cast and pre-date rims and use of rubber.
All in all they are really good images for comparison but to you they contain your essence!!!
Best regards
Lyndon

Hello Damian
The joints on the chair base are early C20th. Looking at the clothing I would go along with just post WW1
Best regards

Hi there
Fabulous image with not too many clues? They are clearly working with a lot of dust and possibly the 'lumps' of stone are the clue. Your relative is certainly looking good for for his age if he is 60+ ? Has he a watch in his pocket; he looks in charge? His beard is a clue to rural or coastal surroundings as are those bags? East Anglia? Could that be beer in narrow necked bottles or is it likely to be cider? These guys are used to covering up with those 'hankies' and someone clever might recognise the 'bonding' on the brickwork.
.....Can only guess at around 1900.
Good luck

Hi there
I'm sorry I missed this one...I had one of these little horrors in the early 1960s ......I kept it in a box!!!!!...little villiers engined two stokes made by Coventry Eagle. Horrid pressed steel frames and ridgid at that, with pressed steel forks. Mine had a 147cc engine. What a laugh having a pillion passenger !!!!! Nottingham registered in 1928 and costing 28 guineas. There were four models with electric lights and the largest engine, 200cc I think.
Not many of these lasted so I guess the photograph was around 1930!!!
Don't get the wrong idea though at this period CV made some fabulous bikes as well.
Regards
Lyndon
