Lancashire Lookup Requests / GORMAN: Wigan, Lancashire - Back to Ireland?
« on: Saturday 03 February 07 03:04 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my GORMAN family back to Ireland  from Wigan, Lancashire England.

The last known GORMAN that I have information about is my GGGrandfather, MICHAEL GORMAN. He died on 6 MAR 1878 at the Wigan Workhouse, Wigan, Lancashire, England at the age of 25. This means MICHAEL GORMAN was born ±1853. But where was he born? Family Lore says Michael was born in Wigan, Lancashire, England, but there is no record of his birth in or around Wigan ± 5 years either side of 1853.

MICHAEL GORMAN married MARGARET DORAN in the last Q of 1875 at the Wigan Register. They had one child: STEPHEN GORMAN, born 20 JUN 1879. After MICHAEL GORMAN died in 1878, MARY DORAN-GORMAN married THOMAS DOYLE in 1882 at the Wigan Register. MARY DORAN-GORMAN-DOYLE died at Wigan in 1914.

Now you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that if MICHAEL GORMAN died on 6 MAR 1878 and his son STEPHEN GORMAN was born on 20 JUN 1879 ... then there is 15 months between the death of the father and the birth of the son!

What perplexes me is the birthdate of STEPHEN GORMAN. I found this date: 20 JUN 1878 in his obituary, but I can't find it ANYWHERE in the official records for the Wigan area ± 5 Years either side of 1878.

QUESTIONS:

Can someone find these records:

1.  birth record of MICHAEL GORMAN ± 5 years either side of 1853.

2.  birth record of his son STEPHEN GORMAN in or around Wigan ± 5 years either side of 20 JUN 1878.

3.  Can this family be traced back to Ireland with this information?

Here is further information about STEPHEN GORMAN:

STEPHEN GORMAN
b. 20 JUN 1878 (?), Wigan, Lancashire, England
d. 30 AUG 1930, Providence, Rhode Island, USA
Married ANNIE POMFRET, DEC 1899, St. Thomas & St. James, Poolstock, Lancashire, England
b. 20 JUL 1877, Wigan, Lancashire, England
d. 18 FEB 1965, East Providence, Rhode Island

Thanks in advance!

Cork / Re: Aherns of east Cork

I have an Ann Ahearn from Ballymacoda who married James Maguire in East Cork. They went to USA in 1850 (Lowell, MA) and then settled in Providence, RI in 1852.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I also have a John Ahearne who was the father of Elizabeth Ahearne (b. 1853; d. at Ballybraher, Cloyne, East Cork) who married David Dorgan (b. 1853; d. August 1917 at Ballybraher, Cloyne, East Cork):

There are only three Ahearn and one Ahearne listed on the 1855 Griffitihs Valuation of East Cork: Johanna Ahearn (Shanagarry, Kilmahon, East Cork) John Ahearn (Ballybraher, Kilmahon, East Cork) and John Ahearn (Monagurra, Kilmahon, East Cork). Finally there is  James Ahearne (Shanagarry, Kilmahon, East Cork). I believe that John Ahearn of Ballybraher was the father of Elizabeth Ahearne for this reason:

The marriage between Elizabeth Ahearne and David Dorgan may have been arranged since their parents were farmers with adjoining properties, the Dorgan property in Carrigkilter and the Ahearne property in Ballybraher.  When Elizabeth Ahearne and David Dorgan did not have their own children they brought to their farm Margaret Grahame, the niece of Elizabeth Ahearne, and John Healy, the nephew of David Dorgan. The marriage of Margaret Grahame and John Healy was also arranged and they were married before they went to live with Elizabeth Ahearne and David Dorgan. These arrranged marriages kept the properties of Carrigkilter and Ballybraher in the family until the present day. Ironically, none of the five children of Elizabeth Ahearne and John Healy married and none had children. The ancestral Dorgan property at Carrigkilter has been sold twice, only the ancestral Ahearne property at Ballybraher remains which has extensive land holdings.

WeeMary:

Thanks for the information.  I have a couple of questions:

1) What does MI stand for?
2.) You listed a Duncan McKenzie who died 10th August aged 36 years. What was the year of his death?
3.) You listed John McKenzie, farmer in "Wellhouse of Kilcoy". What or where is Wellhouse? Was it, and is it today, a small hamlet/town, or was it and is it today, a farmhouse?
4.) My John McKenzie is listed as a "butcher in Kilcoy". His children were baptism in Urray Parish. Is there a cemetery connected with Urray Parish? And, if so, are there records of the gravestones?

Thanks for your help!

Weemary:

You said that JOHN MACKENZIE died in 1801 and his wife Isobel died in 1873. Is 1873 the correct date for Isobel, becasue that is 72 years after the death of JOHN MACKENZIE? Can yoou check the date for Isobel again, becasue if you mis-typed the date for Isobel, then this may be the husband and wife I am loolking for!

Thanks for your time and effort.
