Unfortunately no further progress.  A visit to the National Archives last year looking at documents related to HMS Powerful found that there were in fact two Nicholas Hixons on that ship at different times - one from Tralee Ireland (but not ours), and another whose birth place was recorded as 'Venus Brigg'.  That doesn't appear to be a place, but a ship! So end of road??

Hello ‘CaroleW'

Thanks again - I think that I will wait to see if the Death Certificate is the right one first.  If it is, then I will pursue the local death notice availability in Swansea.

Regards

Hello ‘CaroleW”
Thanks for your response and information.
I omitted to mention in my earlier post that I believe that my Uncle was married circa mid 1960’s (wife unknown), and had a child called Eliza circa late 1960’s. I think that he passed away sometime after 1974, and died relatively young. The death record that you identified in the September QTR 1985 at Swansea may well be him.  I have ordered a copy of this from the GRO.
Do you know whether it is possible to access death notices in Swansea around 1985? If I could, then this would be additional confirmation of his date of death
Thanks again.

I am trying to find out what happened to my Uncle, Ken W. Thomas c 1922. He was the second eldest son born to Edwin John Archibald (‘Archie’) Thomas c 1895 and Caroline Louisa Thomas (nee Goulding) c 1895 who lived in the village of Newton, Swansea Wales.

Ken left Newton in the mid-1950’s for work reasons, and possibly went to London, England.
Other siblings in this family were my father Francis John (‘Jack’) Thomas c 1921, Mollie Stephanie Thomas c 1924, Graham Thomas c 1926 and Maureen Thomas c 1930.

I would be grateful if anyone could assist.

Lanarkshire / JAMES SUTHERLAND c 1739

My research indicates that my ancestors may have moved to Berwick Upon Tweed England in the late 18th century from Scotland. I have traced my 4th Great Grandfather (James Sutherland) and my 4th Great Grandmother (Hay Sutherland) to a gravesite at the Holy Trinity Church Cemetery at Berwick Upon Tweed, England.

The headstone inscription states the following:

IN MEMORY OF
HAY, WIFE OF JAMES SUTHERLAND
WHO DIED 18 TH NOVEMBER 1811:
AGED 64 YEARS. ALSO
JAMES SUTHERLAND WHO DIED THE
13 TH OF MAY 1819 AGED 80 YEARS:
ALSO WILLIAM SUTHERLAND
THEIR SON WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE
JULY 1ST 1845 IN THE 65 YEAR OF HIS AGE.
ALSO CATHERINE  1 ST WIFE
WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE ON AUGUST 16 TH
1809 IN THE 26 YEAR OF HER AGE.
ALSO ELIZABETH SECOND WIFE OF
THE ABOVE WILLIAM SUTHERLAND
WHO DIED 7 TH APRIL 1864
AGED 80 YEARS

Unfortunately, this is where my Scottish research comes to an abrupt halt.  There was an IGI entry that stated that a marriage between James Sutherland and a Hay Urquhart occurred circa 1777 in Lanarkshire Glasgow Scotland.  But I have been unable to verify this statement.  The IGI record was submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. No additional information was available.  The IGI entry claimed that Hay Urquhart was born in Glasgow (circa 1756), and that the two wed in her hometown in 1777. They may have produced a daughter Jean c 1778 (IGI), and definitely a son William c 1780.

I would be grateful for any assistance anyone can offer!

The scenario that you have outlined Roger certainly seems feasible. It ‘ticks the boxes’ on where he came from (possibly Plymouth, Devon), why he was 43 years when he married Mary Morgan in 1801,and how he was able to get from Plymouth to Swansea on board the HMS Powerful. If a crew list was found for HMS Powerful, and he was listed together with his age, it may at least confirm or otherwise, whether it’s our Nicholas Hixon c 1758.

Thank you for your research notes.  We also found the deaths of Nicholas and Robert Hixon - both of whom died at a young age, as you have discovered.

The father of Jane Hickson was James Hickson who may have been born around Loughor circa 1750 at a guess. And as you say, possibly a relative of our Nicholas Hixon who was born circa 1758.

Unfortunately, the current Hickson family thinks that Nicholas came from elsewhere. As there were a lot of Hixons centred in the Swanage, Dorset area in the 1841 England Census we tried to find him there through the Dorset FHS - no joy.

Many thanks again for your thoughts.

I am trying to find out details of my wife's 5th Great Grandfather's baptism, where it happened and hopefully who his parents were. The family name can appear as HIXON, HIXSON and of recent times, as HICKSON.

Nicholas Hixon married Mary MORGAN on 18 February 1801 in Saint Marys Church, Swansea, Glamorgan Wales.  They raised four children – John Robert HIXON c 1801 (my direct ancestor), Nicholas HIXON c 1804, Robert Hixon c 1807, and Mary HIXON c 1809.  All were born in Swansea and baptised in Saint Marys Church.

He was buried on 15 October 1823 at Saint Marys Church cemetery, aged 65 years – hence a birth date circa 1758.  He was probably not from Glamorgan, as I can find no earlier records of the HIXON name.  There was a family belief that perhaps he originally came from Dorset or Devon, England. However all research to date in those localities has drawn a blank.

Can anyone assist please?  Many thanks.
