“It was not until June, 1917, that, armed with Field Artillery equipment, they proceeded to France as part of the 126th Army Field Brigade”

My understanding is that Field Artillery refers to the fully-mobile 13- and 18- pounder wheeled light guns operated by the RFA & RHA, whereas the 4.5” to 8” howitzers were the heavy, often dug-in guns manned by the Siege Batteries of the RGA.

World War One / Re: Alfred Charles Matthew LOWTHER (1896-1932)

Printer,

Have you heard of "Lowther's Lambs"?

They were the 11th, 12th and I believe 13th Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment; they were raised by Col. Lowther (MP for Sussex), a total of around 3,000 men early in the war. They suffered very heavy casualties in a a stupid diversionary attack on July 1, 1916 at the beginning of the Battle of The Somme.

Your Alfred Lowther was possibly, very distantly related to the Lowther family; an on-line search will provide more info than I can.

Good Luck with your research,

LEST WE FORGET!

Bear in mind that “mariner” was also routinely used to describe a coastal fisherman.

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: STANDBYNORTH or STAMMER
« on: Thursday 08 August 24 18:24 BST (UK)  »
Webby,

I have the Standbinorth/Stanbinorth/Standbynorth line in my family tree.

My father was from Hastings and I have built my tree backwards to Gt-GT-Gt-grandfather from his info, and then via Ancestry further back.

My line is,
John Stanbinorth = Joan Ayte
1510-78
TO,
Henry Stanbinorth = Joan???
1538-90
TO,
Peter Stanbinorth = Joanna Rogerson
1579-1657
TO,
Richard Balle = Bridget Standbynorth
                         1610-45

and that is the last of my Standbynorth ancestors.

Because my tree is pretty much linear (direct descent), I have not recorded the various siblings/cousins along the STANB line, so cannot add anything more.

The given name Grimbolde is new to me, as is the Stammer/Stanmer derivation also.

Regards,

JMB

Does "natural son of Sarah Reeves"......denote a child born out of wedlock?

Armed Forces / Re: Scottish foot soldier at Lewes, Sussex 1738

I have been told that regiments were moved away from their home areas to other parts of the country so that, in the event of public disorder, they would not be ordered to fire on their own kin.

When my grandfather joined the British Army in 1914, he was an older ex- Regular soldier and he was given a GSSR regimental number.

GSSR = General Service Special Reserve, so I wonder if your man is similarly Special Reserve
(Regular?).

Do you know his age, and if he had prior service in the RN or British Army?

The Common Room / How to edit Tags in Ancestry
« on: Wednesday 30 August 23 23:35 BST (UK)  »
I have written tags for several people in my family tree.

Now find that I would like to make some edits; however, cannot find the appropriate "EDIT" command, and cannot just overwrite the edit.
What am I missing?
