Wow, that’s absolutely brilliant! I didn’t realise they had had another child, although unfortunately the outcome wasn’t a good one. Thank you so much Aghadowey, for your detective skills, I had searched for so long without finding anything. It’s really much appreciated. Presumably on the birth of Margaret they gave a false marriage date, to appear they were all above board, so to speak.
Thank you Rosie for suggesting the second wife’s marriage to find George’s parents.
Just before I came away I found the 1851 census from Dalry, Ayrshire, which lists a George Wilson aged 16, along with his family, all born in Ireland apart from the last daughter, Rachael. I wasn’t sure if this was him, but now with the Rachael connection, I think maybe it is. His parents are listed as Thomas and Jane Wilson, but I’m not sure which part of Ireland they came from. George is also listed as an ironstone miner - perhaps he went from that to being a steamship stoker, although he is listed as being a hammerman in 1871.

Derry (Londonderry) / George Wilson and Margaret Henderson
« on: Wednesday 20 December 23 15:43 GMT (UK)  »
I am struggling to find anything about the Irish origin of this pair.
I have found George Wilson on the 1891 Scottish census which shows him to have been born in Londonderry, and then the place looks like Auchadoo. Could the enumerator have got it wrong? He would have been born about 1835, 36.
He married a Margaret Henderson who was also born in Ireland about 1840,41.
Both of them appear to have come over to Scotland in the 1850s, but I can find no trace of a marriage. Did they come back to Ireland to get married? I also cannot find a death certificate - Margaret Wilson nee Henderson appears on the 1871 Scottish census but not on the 1881 census, and she is marked as deceased when her daughter marries in 1884. Again would she have gone back to Ireland.
I would love to get some more information on these two who are very elusive, especially as I am in the area just now, but don’t really know where to look.
Thanks.

Lanarkshire / Date of Death Margaret Wilson
« on: Tuesday 17 September 13 16:49 BST (UK)  »
I am having trouble finding the date of death of my ancestor, Margaret Wilson.  She was born about 1841 in Ireland, and the last time I see her is on the 1871 census, aged 30 living at 19 Grace Street, Glasgow Barony.  According to her daughter's marriage certificate (31.12.1884, Maryann Wilson to Alexander Aird) she was deceased at that time.  For some reason I can't find the birth of Mary-Ann or her elder brother Alexander either, although I think it was 1863 and 1861 respectively in Glasgow.  If anyone can help I'd be very grateful. Margaret Wilson (nee Henderson was married to George Wilson, also born in Ireland.)

Europe / Re: Prior family in France

Thanks for that Jorose - I hadn't realised I'd posted that before, and haven't been doing any research for a while, so had forgotten.  That is really interesting information about George Prior being in the jail for bankruptcy - I wonder what went wrong!  You have given me lots more information to be going on with. Thanks again.

Lanarkshire / Re: Schools in Glasgow

Thank you everyone for your replies and interesting information.  My father was baptised at Plantation Parish Church and my grandfather was married according to the 'forms of the Church of Scotland'.  I shall check with the Mitchell Library to see if there are any records for either of them. Thanks again

Europe / Prior family in France
« on: Monday 02 September 13 17:06 BST (UK)  »
I have a family of boatbuilders, surname Prior, who lived in Poole, Dorset in 1839, as that is when their son, Austin was baptised.  The next son, William Henry appears to have been born in Cherbourg on 4.12.34.  I cannot find the family in the 1941 census, but then they appear again in 1951 and are living in the Isle of Wight.  By then, the eldest son, George appears to have married a French woman, (H)ester Grace Bamenis.
Is there any way of telling whether the whole family went to France, how and why they went, and when they came back?  Is it possible they went over under their own steam?
The family in 1931 would have been George 35, Philadelphia 35, Elizabeth 10, George 8, Horace 4, Ridley 3, Willis 3 and Austin a baby. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

Lanarkshire / Schools in Glasgow
« on: Monday 02 September 13 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I was wondering how I could find out which schools my father and grandfather went to.  My father, Robert Paton lived in Elder Street when he was Primary School age in 1920, and my grandfather, James Paton lived in Lambhill St.  He was born in 1879.
Does anyone know if the schools they were likely to have been at hold records and how I can access them? Thanks.

Thanks for the information = I think Richard Pharoah was a master of all trades - doing whichever job he could get!
It's certainly an interesting family.  Thanks again for your help.
