Hello Boo,

I came across your request as I was looking through some threads for Burnopfield . I attend St James church, Burnopfield and I have looked up the details in our church register today for you.

Name       Mary Elizabeth Gilliland
Abode       Hobson Colliery
Date         Buried July 16th 1905
Age           34 yrs

The other comment is   B.Dennison. not according to the rites of Church of England.
I wonder if he was the Methodist Minister because remember in the death notice it did say service at chapel at 3. I remember that there was a chapel at the Hobson but of course they did not have a graveyard there. Burnopfield is very close to Hobson.
Incidently while I was looking this up one person said that he went to school with a Gilliland and somebody else knows of a Gilliland who will be in his 60's and live in nearby Lanchester!
Hope this helps.
Regards, Daz123

Welcome to Rootschat

The way things work is  through the kindness of strangers who have a common interest in genealogy. Whether in forums like this one, or transcriptions that are online, we all benefit from the knowledge and work of others and , in turn, we answer questions in here if we think we can help.
I asked the original question in this thread. Initially I wanted to know which cemetery it was likely to be. That would then lead me to pinpoint the right register at the archives to look through and find the entry to give me the info I wanted. I was very lucky (and grateful) that I got way more than that and someone who was able to look up the register took the time to do so and give me the information. Since then, the friend I was helping has visited the archives and now has a copy of the page which shows the burial entry.
Someone may see your question in this thread and be able to help with specifics. I can't, sorry,  but I can tell you that, if you don't get a specific reply in here then Durham Records office have copies of the burial registers for the years you need. If you are going to be in the Durham area and still don't know 'if' they were buried at St James, you can look it up at the archives office.

That link will take you to the catalogue listing at Durham Records Office for St James Burnopfield.

good luck with finding them
Boo

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to reply and many apologies because actually I thought I was writing to Daz123 who seems to be able to look up burials in St. James Church, Burnopfield which she attends. As I said before, I am not finding this site very easy to use, but I am sure I will get used to it.

Thank you once again

I am sorry to pick on you out of the blue, but this is the first time I have used the site and I am finding it very difficult to use.

If I have read your posts and replies correctly, you know St. James Burnopfield very well and can perhaps tell me who to contact to find out if my great-grandparents John Matthew Trotter and Mary Annie Trotter (nee Sanderson) are buried there and some clues as to whereabouts in the graveyard as I am due for a visit up North later this month. They were both living in Burnopfield when she died in 1900 and he in 1909.

I will not be offended if you don't reply as it is probably the height of rudeness to do what I am doing, but I don't know the proper way to ask this question. Please don't ban me as I am hoping to get better at using the site
