Australia / Re: Help identifying where this place could be

Not sure if the time of year is much of an issue. The lower trees look to be healthy and the surrounds look fairly clean ie no rising or falling mud/water lines. I think there is good flow out of there

Good point. So ... some parts of the Kimberly and Katherine Gorge would be out of contention .. I'll have to look at my photos to check.

Also Katherine Gorge ... and probably a few others. A date may help ... months ... the amount of water would mean it is not the wet.

I don't think it's Katherine Gorge.

But it's been a while since I was last there.

There is a walk from Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls... There is lots of it.

Carnarvon Gorge ... don't recall anything like that. Nor Kings Canyon.

Blocks
Blocks were very large back in the 'old' days ..
My grandfathers' block is now 3 blocks... in fact it was built before most of the local roads .. and  when one such road was put in it had to do a dog leg around my grandfathers' block. Usually the householders grew fruit and vegetables, and had chickens. They usually had horses for transport too.

Names vs Numbers
Most old properties had names and they were in use before numbers became available. The local council may have a record relating names to numbers. It may also be a state government document too - lot numbers are used to identify land and there is a relationship form those to possibly names and numbers.
Names are still in use by large rural agricultural properties, thought  the mail tends to run on numbers, the locals will use the name.

Some of 'my' UK suppliers have gone to a different (probably 'cheaper') 'free' delivery system .. looks to be by Singapore ... adds about a week to the delivery.  :-\

The joke will be on me if it turns up tomorrow  ;D.

That is what happens to me.. I complain about the lack of delivery and the next day there it is.

Australia / Re: Historic Motor bike Registration Plates - Completed with thanks
« on: Monday 03 August 15 00:36 BST (UK)  »
Also as per earlier suggestion, instead of enquiring as to ''Historic'' plates, what term should I use please? Leanne

"I am looking for the history of my family (or?) member Mr John Doe regarding their use of a vehicle make xxx model yyyy between 1905 and 1930, the registration plate might be ERR 98. Would there be a record of this? If so could I obtain a copy of it?
My name is Mr Joe Doe NSW licence number 98787543, the above person is my GG uncle."

The plate would not have been regarded as "historic" at the time.

If you know the 'number' (the letters/numbers used on the plate)
it is possible to find out who has the plate .. if it is in use. You'll need a reason and provide your details .. this is usually to track someone after a hit and run incident.
if it is out of use .. then I don't know .. contact them and find out? You'll need to provide ALL the details .. if you don't know them then there would be too many responses.

If the request is unusual enough someone may see it as a challenge. Good Luck

Do note: "Historic Plates' are a form of registering old vehicles that only get used for club events (and going to the mechanic or tuning up  ;) ) .. you might be best off not using that term as it may lead to confusion.

Thank you Merlin  :)

Condo I was trying to get more info from the OP, Merlins' link to the earlier posting has somewhat done that.

Kaysands ... Have you searched for Annes' death ? Not found in Tas, Vic, NSW etc? Trove?
It would be nice if you want to ask again to format the information you have so we don't redo it...

Ann WILSON
birth ~ 1832 ?England
transported ex Sir Robert Seppings ~?
marriage 1854 - housemaid spinster to William SANDS 30, Coachman, Widower. Oatlands Tas.

1855 separated? Or died? OR ? William takes up with another woman? And/or did she run off with someone else?

Looks like Ann was illiterate so the spelling may change from time to time. Thus Anne or Ann, Sands or Sanders are all possible.

===================
A search
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/result?q&exactPhrase=Anne+Sanders&anyWords&notWords&requestHandler&dateFrom=1855-01-01&dateTo=1900-12-31&sortby&l-state=Tasmania

gets as one result from a few
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/72197026

Which is the 1863 report above.

------------------
So looking for her 1855 onwards .. death would help ... did she go back to Wilson? The death date would limit the search date for information. It would also give a hint of the places to search. SO I'd think finding her death would be most usefull at this time?

What searching have you done so far?

From a trove search on William Sands

SANDS.-On the 30th of April, at Launceston, the beloved wife of William A. Sands, of Beaconsfield, in the 26th year of her age. Her end was peace.
Launceston Examiner (Tas. : 1842 - 1899) Friday 14 May 1880.

That does not match as birth would be ~1854.. the date of their marriage? Umm .. errors?

Search on Anne Sands

"Ann Sanders said that on Thursday evening, the 4th instant, she met deceased in Sing David-lane. Slmcl welL Deceased was alone, with her hair hanging loosely over her neck, and much excited. She had )ģeen drinking, and iu reply to witness said, ' My husband is going to beat me.' Witness advised her to keep out of his way, and she promised to do so until his temper was over. The deceased was not a female given to drink, and "
The Cornwall Chronicle (Launceston, Tas. : 1835 - 1880) Saturday 29 August 1863

? What do you have for her ? birth, death date & place would help?
Will of her husband give any clues?

There are a few results for Mary Ann Sands ...
