Aberdeenshire / Re: Coutts Wm Aberdeenshire farmer 1880s, 1890s +?

Thanks to all who replied.  Yes, I have seen the Birth certificate. Father not mentioned.  His name, William Coutts, was on Andrew's own marriage certificate in 1928.  I also have a paper stating Andrew Buchan is the same person as Andrew Coutts.  His mother was Jessie Buchan, and yes, that is the correct Andrew boarding in Monquittor in 1881.  He was born in Ellon (his mother's home) 8 Feb 1880.  He was not baptised until 29 Nov 1883 and then it was at the Episcopal Chapel Cuminestown. (wrongly as Andrew Bruce) .  Jessie married in Dec 1884  and sometime prior to that, Andrew went to live with his father, but I don't know where.  At about age 9, when his "step-mother"  had her own babies, he was boarded with Alexander Reid of Fyvie, shown on the 1891 census.  Andrew remained there although his father apparently wanted him back "when he was old enough to work".
Andrew became a policeman and later joined the South African Constabulary.  Alexander Reid was given in place of next of kin.  Jessie had died in 1890, but I don't know if William was dead or just ignored.
I have not looked at kirk session records, nor poor relief, but have asked for help searching school records when he was in Fyvie.  I don't know how I could search ALL the records from Canada.
Thanks again,
Sandyhook

Aberdeenshire / Coutts Wm Aberdeenshire farmer 1880s, 1890s +?
« on: Sunday 15 September 13 01:34 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone help me locate my grandfather William Coutts who was a farm labourer or small crofter in Aberdeenshire?
There are several William Coutts who were farmers or farm workers on the 1881 and 1891 census, and I am unable to determine which is “mine”. He had a son out of wedlock in 1880 (did not marry the mother) who was boarded out to Alexander Reid in Fyvie, Abd. before 1890. He had a “wife” and other children at the time.
At no time is William on the census with my father, nor can I find a school registration.

Any suggestions appreciated!

I am new to this forum, so am reading your post 4 years after you posted it.  However, I am in contact with someone who has done research on the Haydock family in Killyman parish near Dungannon.  The family were Quakers.  Susan Cross, b. 1935, married Thomas Haydock and then emigrated to the US.
