What a lovely find, but sad they're not with the families they belong to.

[/quote] She did go on to say that the parents then named a subsequent son Jim (I didn't want to confirm that as I didn't know if the latter was still living or not but you've confirmed it now).

Out of curiosity how come you're seeking info on your Grandparents when you have your Dad and numerous Uncles & Aunties to quiz??

Unfortunately they don't have a great deal of information, it seems when they were young anything in the past stayed in the past, wasn't spoken about...I guess it was a case of living in the here and now.....which is fine until you get the likes of me wanting to find out more!

Some of them may know more than I realise, but if they do the info hasn't been given to me. When I can get some sense of things I'll organise a get together and quiz them more!

You can't really miss it Mairead. As you go down William St. it's near the top of the hill on the right hand side. There is still the mark of the old sign over the window.

That's great, thanks....I shall have a look next time I'm over, probably not 'til summer now though  :(

Spoke to my Mum this evening as she lived in Maudlintown around the same time as your father. I'm not sure if this is the same family but she said the Swains lived in Eden Vale (opposite Saltee Ave where mum lived) prior to moving to Antelope Rd. She recalls there being 3 girls and at least 7 boys before preceding to rattle off their names (although Mum moved to England almost 60 years ago she has this amazing memory for names!)

I can't repeat any of them as they may still be living but she did say one of the boys, Jim, died in a fire.

No doubt your Dad will be able to verify the facts.

Oh bless your Mum, what a great memory! There were indeed 3 girls and 7 boys, but Jim is alive and well....I wonder whether there was another before him?

Many thanks to Shorts for directing me to this thread.

I wonder whether anyone is able to pinpoint the actual house that used to be Kerfoot's public house?

I ask as it seems my Grandad (Thomas Swaine) lived next door. I've been up and down that road so many times over the years and never knew he'd lived there (and possibly my Nanny too when they married), so would love to find it when I'm next over from England.

Many thanks for any help.  :)

As at the 1911 census the Swains lived next to a public house owned by the Kerfoot family - see    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003621977/

Therefore this topic may be of interest in that as the Kerfoot's old house can still be identified it may help locate the home of the Swains.

Oh well this is all just amazing, I can't thank you enough for your help!

I've forgotten the Maudlintown address but will find that out later, and see if I can get any more info to go on.
