Down / John Cleland (b. 1766) of Creevycarnonan
« on: Thursday 11 April 13 21:44 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction to begin researching what became of my 5th great grandparents and their children.

John Cleland (son of James Cleland and Mary Hamilton) was born 29 Mar 1766 at Creevycarnonan.  He married M. Jane Gray of Inch on 05 May 1791 at Inch.  Two sons were born to them:  William circa 1792 and Thomas circa 1798 both at Creevycarnonan.  There is possibly additional children born to John and M. Jane and I would love to locate them.

Can anyone suggest any tips?  I've been through MANY books on this particular Cleland line but most information ends with John being born to James and Mary.

Thank you very much.

The Common Room / How do I research in the Common Journal?

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me out please.

Background:  I'm trying to locate a Scottish prisoner captured at the 1650 Battle of Dunbar and deported to The Colonies.  On Thursday, 03 Feb 1652 a request for a report on these Scottish prisoners was recorded in the Common Journal (Volume 7, page 254, column 1, paragraph 4):  "Ordered, That the Council of State do take into Consideration, what Prisoners of the Scottish Nation have been taken during these Wars, either in England or Scotland; and to make an exact List of them, and how they have been disposed of, and where they now are; and report the same to the Parliament with all Speed: And likewise that the Council do take Order, that a fit Provision and Relief be given to such of them as are in Prison, and in Necessity, according to the Rules formerly given." http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=24155

Question:  How do I locate the response to this request?

Thank you very much!

Hello Diddy,

I know Alexander Bow is my ancestor for several reasons but the main points are the following:
1. His name is found listed on the Unity's prisoner document from November 1650.
2. His name is first found in The Colonies as a land owner in 1656 at Charlestown (now Boston), Suffolk County, MA, USA
3. He moved to Middletown, Middlesex County, CT, USA in 1658, was officially admitted as a citizen there on 24 Oct 1660, and died 06 Nov 1678 in Middletown.
4. I am not knowledgeable about DNA testing however...descendants of Alexander Bow fall into the R1b-U106* (R1b1b2a1a*) subgroup. Descendants exhibit a specific recombination event (RecLOH) that shows twin alleles at all of the following three markers: DYS459, DYS464 and DYS724 (CDY).  This is considered a rare subgroup.

Research has proven thousands of Alexander Bow's descendants however nothing is known of him prior to Sep 1650 at Dunbar.

I hope this answers your question, if not I can go into further detail about his life if you would like.

Warm regards,
Elizabeth

George, Thank you very much for the link however the webpage no longer exists.  :(  My 9th great grandfather was shipped to The Colonies after being captured at the 1650 Battle of Dunbar. A list of Scot prisoners captured at the Battle of Dunbar on 03 Sep 1650 and deported to The Colonies aboard the Unity in Nov 1650 can been seen at the R. Stanton Avery Special Collections Department at the New England Historic Genealogy Society in Boston, MA, USA.  To my knowledge no one has yet located the results of the report request (dated 03 Feb 1652, Common Journal, Volume 7, page 254, column 1, paragraph 4).

There is an entry, #10, for George Bruce.

My 9th great grandfather, Alex'r Bow, is #7 on that list.  Can anyone recommend a starting point for research in Scotland with this little scrap of information?

Thank you very much.

I would like further backward.  When/where was he born, parents, siblings, ancestors, etc.  I have no idea where to begin searching.  I have extensive information on his descendants in America.
