there is nothing that matches as yet, but I am having difficulty with my scotish links

as my ancesters, just say scotland as place of birth, we suspect the family may have lived in lasswade/springfield/roslyn area of midlothian but not confirmed yet.

the closest we have found is an ancestor called george muir who was a papermaker, we found a george muir paper maker 1841 census in lasswade who could fit the bill but is not a confirmed match and we do not know who his parents were or if he had brothers or sisters (we thaink he had one called lillias and maybe an older sister called jannet  who married a watson)

i do not know if any of this links to you at all

as for ida elizabeth muir nee blakeborough she died in knaresborough the cemetary was just around the corner from where she lived, is there one called park cemetary? i did have its name from a news article from 1936 july aug sept

would this info help narrow the search, does the libray in harrogate have a good resources?

Durham / Re: aliases

I cant remember the source of hand as my sister found the record, i think it might have been a census.

we don't think it was an adoption as we have sourced parents. he went by the name of mclen on several census the used harker then mclen again.

i thought maybe it could be something to do with prison? we have no idea if he was ever in trouble but if he was maybe he trying to hide it to get work again

Durham / aliases
« on: Friday 13 May 11 23:52 BST (UK)  »
whilst doing a family search a relative came up as having an alias, mclen alias harker, as far as we can tell there were no harker relatives. as you can imagine they proved hard to find this was in durham around 1870 ish

so in what circumstances would an alias be used and accepted in official records?

any thoughts or similar experiences?

Midlothian / Re: Muir family in Lasswade

The ancstry family tree is probably my sisters, the stumbling block we have is tyin our family to the 1841 lasswade family, although it is a close match, there is no definate link other than occupation of father and a brother called alexander. That is why we need the births in scotland, as since moving to england they only recorded thei birthplace as being scotland rather than the actual location which makes it very hard to link up.

thanks for looking

Northumberland Lookup Requests / Re: photo's old phenoix inn bridge street morpeth

Hi Michael

it certainly turned into more of a detective mystery, last year nobody even knew their was a pub with this name, now we possilby have two!

I was in morepth on monday with my camera, to further support the the pheonix also being on the other side I saw a picture showing a theatre come picture hows supposedly in pheonix court, this is out back of the queens head ie the area where the car park and leisure centre are (next to the river).

Those directories provide usefel information, for instance my ancestor wo lived on bridge street in 1891 was a coachman, not sure if it was domestic or not but it was big business for morpeth as i read the blackbull pub had stables for 80 horses!

regards

yes so I thought,

did you look at the link I provided in my last post, check out the building bottom right 3 along from the queens head, unless this document was created incorrectly for the tax valuation, then it is showing an old peonix PH (public House)?
