Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Jacob Robins of Cawston, Norfolk
« on: Monday 03 June 13 18:34 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Thank you for your reply and suggestion of birth for Jacob.  Just recently I had a reply from another Roots chatter who was able to answer another query I had posted re Jacob's sister Mary (e.g. who she married).  Through this I was given information about Jacob's father's Will e.g. it mentioned Mary's husband.  My Jacob's father was another Jacob who married in 1699 in Heydon, Norfolk.  This family of Robins had many staunch non-conformists amongst its midsts and, therefore, this has made it difficult to trace baptisms as children do not show up on baptismal records for parish churches.  This is true in the case of my Jacob even though around the time of his birth his father was a blacksmith at Buxton in Norfolk neither Jacob nor his siblings show up on parish records either in Buxton or Heydon.

This branch of the family also has connections with Norwich (Jacob junior married there in 1730) and it is possible that he was born or baptised there?  I have, however, been provided with so much information through my Roots Chat post(s) re Jacob and who his siblings and father were that not finding his baptism isn't such a problem at the moment as I have much to digest!

I have also found out that Jacob senior is very closely related to a Thomas Robins (1653-1726) who was a very wealthy man in the village of Itteringham, Norfolk.  He had built a splendid Manor House built for himself in 1707 (it still stands today) and was Lord of the Manor of over 200 acres at the time of his death.  I think Thomas is probably Jacob senior's uncle but more research needed there!

Once again thank you for your suggestion.

Regards.

Hi Carole

Just a postscript to my message above... the only way the above would connect to my Jacob Robins is if the Jacob Robins who died in 1764 in Aylsham is his father?  Then Mary Robins would be my Jacob's sister and hence her son Jacob Shalders would be Brettingham Robins' cousin.  My Jacob is born c1708/09 and if the Jacob who died in 1764 was born late in 1680 or 1790 it would fit.  Have you had sight of Jacob Robins' Will?  I know they can be obtained from the Norwich Records Office.  Also my Jacob was a Baker (a trade that goes on down through the family) so it would be interesting to know what Aylsham Jacob did for a living?

Kind regards,

Deborah

Hi Carole

As I thought Jacob Shalders' wife was a 'Robins' but her father Jacob does not tie in with my Jacob Robins as he died in Cawston in 1758 (and is buried in the churchyard there) and he also left no Will.  However, Brettingham Robins (one of my Jacob's son's) clearly names their son Jacob Shalders (baptised in 1736 at Bradfield Independent Chapel) as 'his cousin' and executor in his Will of 1782.  Brettingham Robins has a son William Robins (1765-1810) also names "Friend John Shalders, City of Norwich, Grocer" in his Will.  John (I believe) is a son of Jacob Shalders as he is mentioned in trade directories of 1812 as being a Grocer alongside Jacob.

Had it not been for Mary being a Robins I would have just thought 'cousin' perhaps just meant he was a close friend of Brettingham but I am sure the connection is more than that but just how Jacob Robins of Aylsham (Aylsham and Cawston are very close to each other in Norfolk) ties in with Jacob Robins of Cawston I am not sure.  My Jacob marries under a Marriage Bond in Norwich in 1730 and not Cawston but I have no proof (yet) he originates from there.

Thank you for your help... it ties up one loose end for me :)

Regards,

Deborah

Hi Yorkslass

Thank you for the link to the Archdeacons Transcripts for St. Martin at Oak for the period I would be interested in.  I was aware they are available but haven't ever looked (time factor) but will investigate although as you say most are illegible.

I did take a proper close up look at the Marriage Bond for Jacob and Mary and was interested to see that although it mentions the marriage should take place in St. Saviour's in Norwich they are given the option to marry in Cawston, Norfolk.  However, those records are transcribed relatively clearly and they do not marry there in 1730 or a few years beyond.  So I need to look at the records for St. Saviours and see if they actually do marry there in the summer of 1730.

I also 'read up' re the history of Marriage Bonds - interesting to find out why they were used by couples.  Not only for quickness (or in my couple's case not being in or near their home parishes for Banns to be read) but also because they were the preferred option of 'gentry' many aspiring artisans also travelled that route so as to show they were of a better 'class' too.

You have certainly provided me with some excellent information for my tree... now just for the time to put it altogether!

Hi Yorklass

Opps typo I did mean St. Michael's, Coslany not St. Mary's - two very different churches!

Hi Yorkslass

A huge thank you for your looking into the Norfolk Marriage Bonds for me.  I am familiar with the Family Search website but 'missed' the Marriage Bonds somehow.  What a find... it proves what I had begun to think that Jacob Robins hails from Norwich, Mary I know was baptised in Honing in Norfolk.  Plus the confirmation that he too was a baker makes it even more likely that he did come out to Cawston a few years after his marriage probably to buy and work the Smockmill there.  As you said it is a little difficult to read but what I needed confirming is clearly visible.

At least it will now be worth my while searching the baptismal records of St. Mary's Coslany to see if Jacob was baptised there?  Also I have a first child from that marriage that is not baptised in Cawston (though she is buried there in 1735) so again I can now check the parish records of St. Saviour (as her parents married there) to see if she is there.  I think many of the Norwich parish records are not accessible (yet) online but I am only in Essex so a visit on the train to Norwich and its record office is 'do-able' :)

Once again thank you for your help :)

Norfolk Lookup Requests / Re: Norfolk marriages : Cawston please

Hi Mark

I appreciate this 'post' is by now very ancient but just in case you haven't found out what you requested I have added it below.  Sadly the images of Cawston marriages do not begin until 1754 so I cannot help re Robert Nichols marriage to Sarah Porter, however, the marriage dated 1787 is viewable.  The marriage between Robert Nichols and Mary Clarke took place at St. Agnes' Church on 18th July 1787 and was signed by the parties.  It was witnessed by Thomas Clarke and Mary Saul.  They too signed their hands.

Hope this is of help?

Hi Yokel

Thank you for the link to Norfolk Windmills and ultimately the link to the Smockmill at Cawston.  Yes I am aware of this site... Jacob Robins' son Brettingham Robins leaves this mill to some of his children in his Will dated 1782.  Sadly as Jacob died 'intestate' I have no way of knowing if he owned the mill first and then Brettingham too over it on Jacob's death in 1758.

It is Jacob who hasn't left any clues behind!
