Canada Lookup Request / Re: MARION "Minnie" GOWAN
« on: Tuesday 02 April 13 09:06 BST (UK)  »
Thank you SO much to everyone for your help!

Jacquie, yes Susan was Marion's sister, and after some years of searching we solved that puzzle too, and are now in regular touch with Susan's family in Canada, which is wonderful. The address and name you mention, Mrs Harmon, must be Marion. At least now I have a married name to work from and a starting address!

Thank you 😊

Hi Sandra

Thanks for your reply :)

You're right, Carruthers was her middle name. She was known by Minnie over here, which is why I out that in. From what you said, my search won't be easy - do you know where I can search cemetery records in Canada? It sounds as though that might be my best bet given what you say about privacy laws.

Hi again,

That's fantastic! Where did you find that? I've been searching for ages via various search methods ;-)

Now if I could just find James' parents.... :-)

Thanks again!

Canada Lookup Request / MARION "Minnie" GOWAN
« on: Monday 01 April 13 13:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out what happened to my Great Aunt, Marion "Minnie" Gowan (born 1905 in Dumfries, Scotland) She arrived in Quebec on the 18th June 1926 after departing from Greenock in Scotland.

After that we have no clue what happened to her! I'm sure she must have married and had a family etc, but we don't know where to begin to find out. It would be fantastic to find out any information and trace our distant cousins in Canada :-)

Thanks,

Claire

Dumfriesshire / GOWAN - Dumfries
« on: Monday 01 April 13 11:58 BST (UK)  »
Hi all  :)

I'm a Gowan, originally from Dumfries but now living in Oz. I've traced my family tree back to James Gowan born in 1821. He married Margaret Craik born in 1823.  They had children Douglas b1846, James b1849, Margaret b1851, Alexander b1854, and Mary b1859.

My question is this - does anyone have any information on parents of either James Gowan or Margaret Craik? And the associated birth and death dates?

I'd be happy to hear from anyone with any information on the Gowans in Dumfries too :-)

Thanks!

Claire

Dumfriesshire / Re: GREEN Lochmaben

Hi all :-)

Apologies for coming to this late. Elizabeth Tweedie was my great great grandmother, and I have managed to get quite far back with the Greens, (but I'm stuck at Henrietta Ryecroft like some others here!) That said, I would be grateful for any other information. I am happy to send anybody the link to my Ancestry.com family tree if they want a look.

My main query is this - Joseph Tweedie Green (1879-1918) and Sarah Carmichael (1881-1953) were my great grandparents. From what I can see, Sarah was illegitimate. BUT, from somewhere (perhaps from information given to me by one of my many Green cousins!) I have her father as a Hugh Ward, born around 1840/41 in County Armagh. He shows up in Lochmaben for the 1901 census, but that's all the info I have. Help anyone? Does anyone know if he was indeed the father?

Thanks in advance, and feel free to email me!

Claire
