Antrim / Re: Owners of a Belfast Pub
« on: Thursday 09 October 25 22:51 BST (UK)  »
My family tree includes a baby born in Belfast on 7 July 1898, father unknown. DNA tells me that the father was one of the Connor family from Maghera. I'm trying to identify which one. So far, John Connor (jnr.), the carpenter, is the only male of that family, that I can find, who was alive in 1897. His profile makes me guess he wasn't the father. The baby's mother, Isabella McGlenon, lived in Belfast about 100 yards from the pub where James O'Connor worked, hence my interest in him, but he seems to be a red herring.
My sweep of the area tells me that in the 1861 street directory, 65 York Street, Belfast was occupied by John Connor, a carpenter. That seems too far back to be significant, but....
I also know that in 1908, when John Connor Jnr's daughter Rose got married, she lived in Old Lodge Road, Belfast.
I really need to fill out the Maghera family but I've no leads there.

Thanks aghadowey.
In Belfast baptism records, I see children of Edward & Mary Anne (McCall):
Hugh 5 Dec 1853
Martha 6 Jan 1857
Catherine 11 Nov 1860
William John 19 Jul 1863.

Before that I see their children in Coleraine baptisms:
Patrick 4 Jun 1844
John 22 Feb 1852.

I can't find Joseph's baptism. However, it's a fair guess that Coleraine is his Derry birthplace.
The O'Connor links you found point to the Limavady area.
My interest in this was to find where in Derry James Connor, publican, was born. My theory was that he was one of the Connor family of Maghera that I enquired about (in the Derry pages) but that doesn't seem to hold up.
I need to find a new theory that links the Maghera Connors to Belfast.

Nothing is simple.

Thanks Kiltaglassan,
I see from the Will that Joseph had a brother Hugh (an undertaker). He died in 1907 - wife Catherine O'Connor, married 1888. That casts a doubt on whether James O'Connor was really Joseph O'Kane's nephew.
The parents of Joseph and Hugh O'Kane were, apparently, Edward O'Kane (died Belfast 1882, age 63) and Mary Anne O'Kane (died Belfast 1889, age 61). Must try to find their Co. Derry origins.

The 1901 census shows Joseph O'Kane, unmarried, from Co Derry running a pub at 9 Frederick St Belfast.
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/St__Anne_s_Ward/Fredrick_Street/959722/
Assisting is Joseph's nephew, James O'Connor, also from Co Derry. When Joseph died on 28 Feb 1909, James O'Connor took over the pub (per 1911 census).
If James was Joseph's nephew, his mother's maiden name was O'Kane.
Can anybody identify where in Co Derry this family was from? I've drawn a blank on church & state records. Can anybody access Joseph's will?
Also, when did James die?
I've posted today on the Derry page about the Connor family of Maghera. There may or may not be a link.

Derry (Londonderry) / Connor Family Maghera
« on: Wednesday 08 October 25 12:59 BST (UK)  »
I've posted on this before but have made a little more progress since then.
I'm trying to find the births/baptisms of the children of John & Elizabeth Connor. John, a carpenter, died 5 April 1884 (age 73). His widow Elizabeth died 29 August 1896 (age 94).
Although I can't find birth/baptism records, I believe their children included:-
*John, a carpenter, who married Jane McGuckian in Maghera, 22 Sep 1869;
*David, a carpenter, who married Alice Stevenson in Maghera, 31 August 1872; (he died 1887)
*Nancy, who married John Tonney(?) in Maghera, 23 September 1853;
*Margaret, spinster, present at the death of both parents & on 1901 census, aged 60.
John was on both census 1901 (age 56) and 1911 (68).
Where were the children born (Co Derry per census I've seen) & can anybody find other siblings? I've drawn a blank on that in church records.

A very belated thanks JohnMB.
That 1871 marriage looks spot on.
But I still can't find either a birth or death for that Catherine.

Thanks aghadowey.
I think all of your links are on the money.
For info, as far as I can see, John Connor & Jane McGuckian had kids:
Archibald 7 July 1870 (married Minnie Clerkin 3 Feb 1904);
Eliza(beth) 3 Oct 1871 (married Francis McGlade 4 Nov 1894);
Nancy 3 July 1873;
John 3 Mar 1877;
William 5 Feb 1879;
Charles 22 Jan 1881;
Sarah 23 Jan 1882;
Mary Jane 2 May 1884;
Rosanna 26 May 1886 (married James Connolly 3 Aug 1908); &
David 18 Mar 1890.
I'm looking for a link to Belfast and I know that Rosanna was living in Old Lodge Road, Belfast, when she married James Connolly in 1908.
As John (1877) shows in Magherafelt on the 1901 and 1911 census, he's not the Belfast link. That suggests that my Belfast link is either William or Charles or, more likely, a brother of their father John - hence my question - can we identify the siblings of that John.
I'm not great at searching the church records but do you think that might be an avenue?

Derry (Londonderry) / Connor family of Magherafelt
« on: Thursday 10 July 25 15:21 BST (UK)  »
I need to identify my Great grandfather to complete the family tree & hang it on the wall for future generations. DNA leads me to a family in Magherafelt called Connor, later O'Connor.
On 22 Sep 1869, John Connor, a carpenter. married Jane McGuckian.
I'm trying to identify John's siblings. Can anybody help?
The few tenuous only leads I have are:-
1/ On 3 August 1872, David Connor married Alice Stevenson. His marriage cert says his father was John Connor, a carpenter. I guess that David was a brother of John above & that there was a father & son pair of carpenters called John Connor.
2/John, the younger, had a daughter Eliza, born 23 Oct 1871, baptised 24 Oct 1871. Her Godfather was David Connor.
3/ On 5 April 1884, a John Connor, carpenter (married), died aged 73. Present at death was his daughter Margaret O'Connor.

So, can anybody identify brothers or sisters of John Connor, Jane McGuckian's husband?

I found the Baptism of Margaret's mother. She was known as Isabella McGlenon, baptised in Downpatrick 9 May 1856. DNA ties in with her sister Elizabeth who married Patrick Brunton in Belfast. The McGlenon name became McGlinn in Elizabeth's case.

Now for the hard part - find Margaret's father. Relying on DNA. Wish me luck.
