The Common Room / Re: What happened to Joseph Russell?
« on: Wednesday 02 August 17 02:05 BST (UK)  »
Did he perhaps emigrate? There is a Joseph Russell on Canadian census b July, 1839, England.  Widowed and living with his son Henry in Quebec. Found on Familysearch.

« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 17:54 BST (UK)  »
There are two Parker family members I am struggling to locate as adults.  Two daughters of
James Parker b 1845 at Allendale and
Jane Russell b 2 Dec 1852 at Unthank, Tweedmouth.

Missing daughters are:
Ann Parker, b Jan 1883, bap 8 Feb 1884 St Andrews Newcastle.
Margaret Parker b Jan 1886, bap 24 Feb 1886. I believe she was also known as Bunty.

Both are on the 1891 census living with parents at Morpeth Street, Spital Tongues, but not on 1901 census. The family split after the death of their mother Jane in 1908. On the 1911 census Margaret is single and living with her brothers James W J Parker and Alexander at Holly Hall, Sandhoe, Northumberland. Cannot locate Ann on 1911 census at all.

Question is what happened to
Ann after 1891 (believe she left home in her teens)
Margaret (Bunty) after 1911 census

An older cousin believes Margaret may have been living in Gateshead and married at a later date. Without her married name I have no idea where to look.

The other Parker siblings were:
James William Johnson P 1876-1957
Margaret Jane 1878-1883
Thomas Johnson P 1879-1949 (In 1914 military brother James W J of Holly Hall named as NOK).
John George 1881-1899 (tragic death)
Hannah 1888-died 1960s South Africa unmarried
Arthur 1890-1971 (WW1 military documents probably burnt as not located)
Alexander 1894-1953 unmarried

I have a distant memory of Whitley Bay and Bunty being mentioned for some reason.

Arthur is the only one with living descendants that I am aware of. Clearing up the mystery would be great.

I would be very grateful for any information or help.

Thanks
CARA

PS It just occurred to me. Siblings very upset at tragic death of John George aged 18 years in 1899.  It could be then that Ann left home.

Montague Lowther Chapman died 1853 off Australia The Chapman's were cousins of Sir Walter Raleigh who gave them land in Ireland in the 1580's hence the Estate at Killau which has an Obelisk erected in the grounds of the Killau Castle in Memory of Sir Walter  Sir Thomas Robert Tighe CHAPMAN 1846 -1919 was born just up the road at South Hill, Delvin he was second son of William Chapman 1812 -1889 who was Montague's 1808-1853 younger brother. Sir Thomas had 4 daughters at South Hill looked after by a "Nanny" from Skye named Sarah Lawrence he had a relationship with her she gave birth to Robert Montague Lawrence out of wedlock and Sir Thomas eventually eloped with her giving up his inheritance to South Hill and Killau  to his younger brother Benjamin in return for an annual payment. He and Sarah arrived at Porthmadog and took accommodation at Tremadoc where the lived as Mr & Mrs Lawrence as she gave birth on 16th August 1888 to Thomas Edward Lawrence later to be known as "Lawrence of Arabia"- Not a lot of people know that!      BUT really he was "CHAPMAN OF ARABIA"!   a friend Ronald D Knight wrote a book :- "T.E. LAWRENCE'S IRISH ANCESTRY AND RELATIONSHIP TO SIR WALTER RALEIGH"   - ISBN: 0 903769 91 3    Cost  £6   sales@lithopress.co.uk   It has photos and a lot of research in this book. Sadly Ron passed away a few years ago. A big loss to the  T E Lawrence Society    Killau Castle has now been renovated by a German Banker who lives there with his family.

T E Lawrence is in my family tree because of the Junner connection.  Note: The spelling of Junner changes and, therefore, difficult when researching.

TEL's grandmother Elizabeth Junner came from Cromarty, joining her brother Walter Junner, a Mariner who settled in Sunderland with his wife, formerly Elizabeth Marriner born Sunderland. On the 1861 census I have the Junner family staying in Church St, Monkwearmouth with Elizabeth (Marriner) Junner's father Christopher, a shipwright. Elizabeth had just had her own baby. Just a few streets from them is Roker Terrace, a large house on the seafront where the Lawrence family were living and Elizabeth Junner a House Servant was working. No doubt already expecting Sarah Junner Lawrence
who was born on 31 August 1861 in Sunderland to Elizabeth Junner and John Lawrence. (His mother's name is Sarah).

1871 census Sarah was living with her uncle George Junner at Dunmore Lodge, Perth Road, Liff Benvie and Invergowrie, Angus, Scotland. (Surname Lawrence born Sunderland).

1881 census again Sarah was living with her uncle George Junner at Duisdale Vore, Skye - a Milliner. (Surname Lawrence born Sunderland).

Perhaps Sarah Junner was employed by Thomas Chapman as governess some time after 1881.

1891 census clearly Thomas Chapman has taken Sarah's name Lawrence and is "Living on Private Means", Longland Road, Kirkcudbright with Sarah and TEL.

I researched this information then found a news article later where another relative reported that Walter Junner's daughter Simonia (Sarah's cousin) confirmed the family connection.

I have often wondered why Sarah gave the middle names of George and Walter to two of her sons.

My ancestors were from Horncliffe.

This may clear up the confusion about Durham/Northumberland.

Very sad to receive this news and so late.

I always intended to get in touch with Brian to say how grateful I was for the well-researched and  reported information generated by him. His personal stories were intriguing. With my ancestors from Allendale I often wondered whether we were related. What an amazing contribution he has made.

A huge thank you Sir!

RIP Brian Pears.

Hi Cara

So interesting that you are near South Shields - I live in NOttingham having moved here from Whitley
Bay over 50 years ago.  Perhaps you could send me a personal email - I forget how to do it on this site and we could discuss things further.  I would love more info on young Eleanor in Venezuela. also who her parents were.  I know George and Sarah died close to each in Shields but have no burial records as yet.  I got as far back as James Russell & Isabella Brown  but that was from the Memorial Inscription at NOrham. Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Marion

Well Marion, the available information has moved on somewhat. I now know what happened to most of Thomas and Eleanor's children: James, Isabella, George, Sarah, Thomas and Joseph. However, we are still left with the mystery of John Russell b 1831, whose daughter Eleanor Jane Russell was born in Venezuela. He must have been very young when she was born. If anyone can offer information about the eighth child of Thomas and Eleanor, would like to hear from you. There were family bibles too and Thomas b 1795 had kept one. Again, if anyone knows of the whereabouts of these bibles and/or their contents, please make contact.

Hi Cara

Thanks for getting in touch - I am not much further forward on the Russells.  Although Thomas and Eleanor are buried at Norham I think they could have been married with an Irregular Border Marriage.  Their daughter Sarah (my 3 x gt grandmother) and George Tindle were married at Mordington Toll 3 Novemb er 1849 and then put  an advert in the Berwick Advertiser.  All the Tindle's that I can find were baptised in the Presbyterian Church.  I cannot find a marriage for GEorge's father William Tindle at all.  George & Sarah moved to South Shields around 1850/51.

I have not done much research lately - Which child are you descended from?  I have always been intrigued by Thomas and Eleanor's grandaughter Eleanor who on the 1861 census says born  America, British Subject, then on 1891 & 1901 states born Caracas, Venezuala?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Good morning Marion. I am so pleased that I am in touch with you as I believe that we can help each other. Firstly, Thomas and Eleanor's first child is James Russell my 2nd G/Grandfather. He was born to Thomas and Eleanor about 1818 in Horncliffe.

If you have a copy of the 1841 census you will see Thomas and Eleanor Russell with 6 of their children (Isabella, George, Sarah, John, Thomas and Joseph) and the family are in one Unthank abode and James Russell is on the opposite side of the page in another. A few lines below the Tindle family (William and Margaret with children Phillis, George, Thomas and House Servant Margaret Lee). James' future wife Margaret Whiteford (my 2nd G/Grandmother) is in another property.

The 1881 census shows his mother  Eleanor living with my 2nd G/Grandfather just before she dies later that year. I have a Norham buriel record that gives more information, but would need to dig it out.

I have traced this family back to the late 1600s. I have lots of information on Eleanor/Venuzuela and I have actually researched your Sarah a little too. She did end up in South Shields and I live very close to the town. Where are you?

Northumberland / Re: Northumberland: Leamington or Lemington or other?
« on: Tuesday 18 April 17 16:23 BST (UK)  »
A little late on the debate.

However, spellings are not great on Durham Bishops Transcript sometimes. It is Lemington, Newburn and Scotswood.  Parts of Northumberland came under Durham for the 1841 census.

Scotswood is probably the most recognised part of Newcastle-upon-Tyne as it is in the chorus of the well-recognised Geordie anthem The Blaydon Races. Blaydon is across the Chain Bridge from Newburn, mentioned in one of the verses. For those outside the north-east of England - get a translator!  ;D

Morvenside appears to be a suburb of Edinburgh from my research.
