Hampshire & IOW Lookup Requests / Re: Bastardry Bond, Alton
« on: Sunday 09 July 06 13:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi Helen,

My Read's originally came from the Blandford area of Dorset before moving to Kingston.  There is a Charles born in 1851 but I haven't followed him through - interestingly though his mother came from Wiltshire (Pentridge?).  It was his niece who married into the Smalls (well, actually nieces as two sisters married two brothers!).

Wouldn't it be just great if we could tie this Smalls together!

Sorry for the delay in responding Helen, things have been a little hectic here and your post slipped under my radar!

I am afraid I know nothing at all of Ann other than Thomas' birth certificate - I have never been able to confirm where she came from, how old she was or anything else about her for that matter - it is a relatively common name in that area at that time and there are several in the locality that could have been my Ann or like you say, she could have come from further afield!

I would be so delighted to find Ann!

I'm not much help here I'm afraid!

Thanks for looking David.

Re your confusion see my earlier posts... Ann is the mother, definately, and the father is a John Maffey.  Henry only comes into the equation on Thomas' marriage certificate but I suspect this is merely what he had been told as I can find no trace of him ever actually living with his mother.

He spent his early years living in the Alton area with another family.

I have no idea what happened to Ann hence looking to see if there really was a Henry Small (butler) married to an Ann following the train of thought that Ann could have had the baby fathered by Maffey but still been married to a Henry.  I then discounted the one coulple I had found as this Ann had another child around the same time as Thomas making it impossible to have been her.

It is all very complicated...sorry if I haven't explained things very well.

Roscommon / Re: Edward Sandys, 1819, Roscommon

Wow!

That's fantastic!  Another descendent of Alexander / Edward has done some research on the Sandys but as yet we have been unable to find a definate link back from Alexander so any information is most gratefully received...

Edward was my great x3 grandfather.  He married Elizabeth Stott in 1844 with whom he had at least 6 children.

Thank you so much for this snippet of information and I would really welcome any further information you or your cousin could provide - especially a transcript or copy of the letter if that was at all possible!!!

I look forward to hearing from you.

Can anyone tell me if there are any Ann Small's listed in the Surrey 1841 Census for Fareham?

I have nothing more to go on I'm afraid - trying to track down the mother of my my GG Grandfather!

Apologies!

Thank you everyone - looks like I might need to invest in a 'hood'.

Managed to freak out some of the family with it though!

The Common Room / Photography help needed... What'd I do wrong?

I took the attached photo at Willesden New Cemetery on Thursday.

I have somehow managed to get a shaft of light across the left of the photo but I'm not sure what I did wrong.  The same effect is on other pictures of the grave but not on other photos taken the same day, so not lens, maybe angle?

If anyone can help so I don't end up making the same mistake again I would be most grateful!  For reference no trees or other 'structures' in the area.
