Tyrone / Re: McGuire/Maguire from Tyrone to South Australia
« on: Saturday 23 August 14 10:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi Ben,
In SA records I can see same as you: Hugh (Snr) d:1896 age 83y Farrell's Flat.  His widow Susan in 1913 age 90y near Burra.  Hugh Philip d:1946 age 83 in Adelaide  and Agnes Mary 1951 age 73 in Wayville.  I assume H.P. McGuire's bride was Agnes WYMAN? Their ages at marriage St Aloysius RC Church Sevenhill at Clare on 11 Feb 1902 are stated as 34 (H) and 23 (W). Not quite consistent with DOD. Issue: 4 daughters: Mary Margaret (m: Wlm RUGE 1924), Lilian Rose (m:John CROCKER 1925), Cecelia Beatrice and Patricia Barbara {1902,04,07,11 resp}
There is a newspaper article Dec 1882 in the Northern Argus (Clare) which names Hugh McGuire,  son Hugh (Jnr) and wife Susan.
In 1876 in the Crystal Brook Police Court, a married woman was fined for stealing a pair of boots from a Hugh McGuire
No record of immigrant arrival either into SA. I have not checked Vic. or WA.
In 1863 there's mention of a Hugh McGuire at Toowoomba Qld.  No birth or marriage in Qld or NSW.  Haven't checked Vic. or WA.
Could he be the Hugh McGuire who arrive 1837 into NSW on the Norfolk and received a Conditional Pardon in 1861?
How do you know he originated in Tyrone?
Do you know when/where the sister married Reilly? I'll be in Adelaide in 2 months, maybe I can check the parish register for witness names and sponsors for the birth of the 4 daughters of Hugh (Jnr) for you.  Is this the right family - 4 daughters?

Totally agree re reiteration. I had responded to the confusion "as to the point being made re NSW BDM"

Based on personal 2012 experience the NSW BMD operated with a variable policy. Bottom line: Errors in BMD can exist.
As known by historians/archivists 'official records' do not necessarily equate to fact.

Was that a recent Marriage Cert?
I had similar success with a typo. (McGuire, as Mcguire) on a Death Cert. issued Nov 2012. On phoning NSW BMD I was read the riot act "We have issued a Certificate according to the information supplied by the informant. Are you the informant?" etc etc then told "send us the original and reason for change, and supporting evidence, and we will consider your application."
I happened to be in Sydney, visited the office, waited 30 mins, interviewed by a Senior Clerk, approved, and left with the freshly printed corrected DC - all up 2 hours. It was a Friday, maybe that made a difference!!

Hi again :). Yes the GeneSA site is the new look SAGHS with the v. useful online search. Their logo of a jig-saw puzzle the shape of SA is very clever, I feel.

When I first saw the 1862 register from St Patricks Nth Ade, I thought I been sent the wrong family!! Jacobum - Who?! ???
Which church for your relatives?
I've not yet seen a Baptism register, can you explain "names of sponsors"? Thanks

What a great way to cross-check. Good thinking.
I assume you're checking against the online index GeneSA, launched 2012.
A few thoughts:
You've allowed for the Latin spelling of their names?
Do they appear in the older CDROMs by Gould?

Apparently the Gould data was hand-gathered (using a blunt term), from many sources. And the new online GeneSA database was loaded directly from the Govt. BDM, instead of the in-house SAGHS - this according to the information SAGHS gave me.

Maybe, at the time the established socio-religious habits stuck fast. Another baby arrives, it is registered when the next RC father visits your locality - miles from anywhere!!

I've been told that the visiting clergy (any faith) were to send into Adelaide (or other Civil Reg. centres) a return of the registrations on some periodic basis. In short the clergy were voluntary collection agencies and clerks for SA Govt BDM. I should read up on that, somehow, to see what the arrangements were.

Fermanagh / Re: 1821 Census: a fragment survived - ARGHALURCHER Parish

Yes, I did think the same too, so triple checked the source site: http://cotyroneireland.com/churchrecord/parishrecords.html

It does read:

Church of Ireland   1787, Kiltermon 1861
Roman Catholic   Aghalurcher (Lismaskea) 1835

I've been to the Seanruad site, and confirm that Aghalurcher is a Civil parish. The documentation for Griffiths says the same.

The birth/marriage I seek are pre-civil, I need to know the name of the Church Parishes which map to Alderwood, Aghlurcher.

Looking in http://cotyroneireland.com/churchrecord/parishrecords.html   I find  "Kiltermon " for C of I, and Aghalurcher (Lismaskea) for RC.

Does this seem correct?  Thanks for all your help, it's great. :)
