Westmorland / Broadbent/Conroys from Bradford and Westmorland
« on: Friday 15 August 25 15:08 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for anyone researching the Broadbent or Conroy family from around West Yorkshire then living at Colby Near Appleby in Westmorland.

John William Broadbent c1857 born Bradford
Daughter Helen Margaret Broadbent b1903

She Married Lawrence Conroy
Name   Helen M Broadbent
Marriage Registration Date   Jul 1927

They had children but they may still be living so will not post any names.

My Family purchased a farm from them in the 1950's in Westmorland and I have a Broadbent Family Bible which came into their possession. It is a large interesting bible. I am anxious to return it to them.

So if anyone knows anything about this family or has research which may be helpful in returning this bible I would be interested to hear.

I have posted this on the West Yorkshire Forum too

Thank you
Judy

One Name Studies: A to G / Re: AIREY - Calling all Airey Descendant's.
« on: Thursday 14 August 25 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Is this page still current?
I am researching Airey's from Morland
My 6thx Gt Grandmother is Elizabeth Airey bap 1677 in Morland. Parents Henry Airey (Arey) & Elizabeth Hebson.
Elizabeth Married Stephen Smith c1676 of Sleagill Morland 18th Nov 1700.

I am still looking for proof of Henrie Airey's parents.
Has anyone researched this please?

Have also got Varey's from Reagill, Crosby Ravensworth in the 15 - 16 hundreds.
Wondered if this was a corruption of the Airey Name. Any ideas

Westmorland / Re: The Earls and the Wilkinson families Westmorland
« on: Monday 16 June 25 12:45 BST (UK)  »
In researching my ancestor Thomas Earl born 1792? Westmorland died 1848 Wigton Cumberland, everything points to Westmorland. I think his parents were a John Earl possibly a Reverend John Earl b 1733 or 1735 Colby d 1799 buried St Lawrence Appleby. He was a chaplain at the old Appleby Gaol . His mother im not sure of her dates at all some dates have been put at 1730 0thers 40 years later , but her name was a Hannah Wilkinson born in Westmorland but died in Wigton . Now ive not been able to consult records in person but everything i check online seems to suggest John Earl was his father . I saw different trees on different siites, its left me confused it has Hannah and John b 1770 and married in 1780 which doesnt add up. Many distant relatives who have gone to Cumbria Archives have had the same answer everything points to John Earl being the father . Now i reckon in Westmorland there is a large amount of Earls there. Also between there and Cumberland itself there are many families with this name im not suggesting they are all related but it cant be dismissed either .I recently did a DNA test Wilkinsons and Earls came up but not any Westmorland Earls as i can see . Anyone with an interest in this please get in touch Christopher

Did you ever prove your Earls came from Colby?

Cumberland / Re: Rumney Hesket-in-the-Forest, Braithwaite or Itonfield

Quick update.
My nearest FamilySearch Centre does not order in Microfiche as it does not  have a Microfiche reader so  can't get to see the OPR's there.

The Cambridge University Library says there are lots of names on the Manor Record they hold. I can either get it copied - 56 pages - you can imagine how much that will be! ::) Or I can go in and see it.

Thank you both again.
Yes I have the Window Tax & Hearth Tax records for Westmorland but think the Cumberland ones don't survive.

Looked through the Manorial Records you found and saw there was something in the Library at Cambridge so have emailed them - haven't received a reply yet - nor from the Cambridge FamilySearch Office asking about the OPR's for Hesket. That's my nearest big town.
Being impatient too I expect quick replies ;D ;D

Have all the Wills for Rumney for the Hesket Parish.  I have gone back to look at them and seen if I have missed anything. Will try & make a family tree with them.
John Rumney of Braithwaite d1604, his is the most informative. I believe John Jnr d1607 & Richard d1633 are two of his sons along with the eldest Edmond (No Will). He was left property in Itonfield. Then there were two daughters - Mabel & Agnes.
However I have some photos of Land Revenue Court Rolls of Hesket held at the national Archives from 1655 which mentions John & Edmond Rumney but not really much more information.

Thanks again. If I find anything else will update the post.

Thank you both for your replies.

Good idea to try & phone the nearest FamilySearch Office and have a word with them. (Have just sent them an email as no number listed.)

Have looked at the FreeReg site but non listed from the Hesket area :-[

Have come across this Government Site listing Protestation Returns - have the originals and a transcript of names which is useful
https://archives.parliament.uk/collections/getrecord/GB61_HL_PO_JO_10_1_82_110
Does anyone know of any other websites listing people  around this time?

Wonder if there are any Manor records from there for around this time? Any ideas?

In the meantime If anyone is going to the Carlisle Archives and has a spare bit of time then would appreciate any photos from the Hesket OPR's or BT's. Willing to pay for the use of camera etc.

Any other ideas gratefully received

If anyone is researching Rumney's from this area please get in touch as we could maybe share information.

Hi ciderdrinker (love the name)
Thank you for the reply.

The Rumneys from Raughton Head are not the ones I am after. I have  Wills for some of them but can't  find a link at the moment.

I have posted  about this family before:-

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=725620.0

I am looking for the ancestors or siblings of Edmond Rumney c1632 who married Margaret Kilner or Rilner in Hesket-in-the-Forest on 20 Apr 1663. Catherine their daughter & my 5x Gt Grandmother was baptised 21 Jun 1663.

I was hoping that there would be more about the family in the Hesket Parish Records rather than the BT's. Also I was hoping for the burials as these are not on any web site.

I have wills which appear to point to Edmonds father to be Edmond Snr. And then his father appears to be a John who left a will in 1604. They also lived at Braithwaite and Itonfield which is just around the Hesket Area.

So really I think the original Hesket Parish Records may be the answer or the burials in the BT's. Unfortunately neither are accessible on-line.

Judy

P.S. On Ancestry most people have Catherine Rumney as the daughter of John Rumney born in Penrith 1656. This I believe is wrong as
1) Catherine would have been 48 when her last child was baptised - not impossible but not likely.
2) Nor was the name Frances, her presumed mother, used by her or her children - unusual!
3) No one checked the OPR's for a Catherine born in Hesket of the right age so just used the Penrith one
4) Why, if born in Penrith, go to Hesket to get married.
