Birth cert for Annie Mary EA Coxon received. She was born on 8/10/88 at 9 Marvell St, Drypool. Registered by Sarah Ann Atkin (present at birth). By 1891, the Atkin's have taken Annie in. She is described as niece, with Atkin as surname (the A on her birth cert). Mother, Emma Coxon, was domestic servant and unmarried. No trace anywhere for her in 1891. Sarah Atkin, unfortunately, died in 1897 and in 1901 her widower is living with his brother, with no sign of Annie. In 1901, however, I noticed an Emma Coxon getting married to Joseph Godfrey in Stockton on Tees, some 90 miles away. This is where my grandmother Annie lived, in later years. In the 1891 census for Godfrey, Annie is listed as a Godfrey daughter, so in some way mother and daughter were reunited.
In her life, Annie was born as Coxon, then lived as Atkin and Godfrey, changed back to Coxon for her marriage, then became my Grandma George. Even later, she remarries as Waugh. No wonder she took some finding, originally! The search is now on to sort out Emma Coxon, who always said she came from New York in Lincs. From what I can see, this consists of a crossroads with a Methodist Chapel.. No trace of Emma's birth - I can't even find which reg district applies. She is along way from Humberside. Next Challenge! Many thanks for your help. Hope the tale is of interest. MJ George
