Family History Beginners Board / Re: Harriett Carroll

Harriet may well have adopted yet another surname in which to marry A A Savage, 1909, which she just may have done at St Leonard's Church, Denton/South Heighton, Newhaven.

It's only a theory of mine - and I've considered this for a while now - the HANNS could well be a mis-trainscripton (barring the marriage certficate coming available) could be the surname HARRIS.

« on: Friday 30 October 15 10:50 GMT (UK)  »
Message to those researching A J Vaughan, otherwise Arthur James Vaughan, otherwise Kenneth James Vaughan, Sgt (Pilot) 916680, ex-RAF, ex-RAFVR, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a forced landing in Kent, April 26th, 1941. Burial at Southease, (St Peter's), near Lewes, East Sussex

I have found a possible marriage for one Arthur James VAUGHAN to one Christine LITTLEBURY, 23rd September, 1925 at the Cathedral of St George, Cape Town, South Africa

Vaughan, bachelor, aged 25, a planter, resident at the time of marriage, Limbe, Nyasaland. Christine LITTLEBURY, spinster, aged 23, residence: London, England. Married by licence.
Witnesses present: Gwendoline Boothly, Archie H Campling, Margaret Wilkinson (struck through), RAS Macdonald and Elaine Montague Hendry
(It is believed there was no issue from the marriage)

http://www.identitynumber.org/marriage-lookup-surname-results.php?surname=VAUGHAN entry no. 83; page 398; image 222 of 412

Christine Littlebury is believed (by this researcher) to be the daughter of one Charlotte May Littlebury and unknown father. Christine poss born Colchester 26th October, 1902, passed away Southend-on-Sea, Essex, 1978

Christine is believed (by this researcher) to have married again, to former Wing Commander, Egbert C Durbin RAF/RAFVR, Hampstead, Middlesex, 1948

As regards badges: the gent with the stick has a different badge to those of the remainder of the men: to my mind, he LOOKS like a police officer.
The other cap-badges seem to have what looks like a rosette? with a scroll beneath, surmounted by a crown - or it even may be a thistle.
I'm guessing that the arm-bands with the 'flash' and sliding? buckle? are there for purposes of visibility. (Could it be that some are 'port' men - and some are 'starboard' men, if they have a connection to vessels?).

There were, of course, many "engine drivers" other than purely locomotive (steam train) drivers.

Query to *alveleyhistorian*. Is the place you mention in your screen-name anything to do with Alveley, Shropshire.?
I ask because there's the River Severn nearby and my further thoughts were that these could be Severn River pilots.

I'll have a guess: raliway marshalling-yard guards or night-watchmen...port authority officials or customs, pilots? (The gent in the white looks to be their cook or steward.) The gent with the sou' wester and rainwear may be providing an example (to the recipient of the photograph, etc.) of what these gents have to wear in foul weather...which may further provide a clue, in itself.

It looks very much like it could be "Engine driver".

It may be stock, as in cattle.
