« on: Saturday 15 October 05 21:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace George SNAITH, born abt 1864 in North Ormesby, North Yorkshire.  To date I have only managed to confirm him in the 1901 and 1891 Census.  The details I have are:

1901 – Yarm (RG13/4592, Folio 66, Page 2)
George SNAITH, Head, 35, General Labourer, North Ormesby - Yorks
Jane SNAITH, Wf, 33, ,Eryholme(?) – Yorks
Mary Lizzie SNAITH, Dau, 13, , Eaglescliffe – Durham
William Thomas SNAITH, Son, 8, , Yarm – Yorks
John Edwin SNAITH, Dau, 1, , Yarm – Yorks

1891 – Yarm (RG12/4023, Page 2)
George SNAITH, Head, 27, General Labourer, North Ormesby - Yorks
Jane SNAITH, Wf, 24, ,Eryeholme(?) – Yorks
Mary E SNAITH, Dau, 3, , Eaglescliffe – Durham
George A SNAITH, Son, 4m, , Yarm – Yorks

I cannot find a George SNAITH that fits the bill in the 1881 Census.  Can anyone please see if he is around on the 1871 for me?

I know that he married a Jane SMITH abt June 1886.  I cannot quite figure out where she was born as the writing on both Census aren’t that clear.  If anyone can help with this, too, that would be great.

Regards

David

Yorkshire (West Riding) Lookup Requests / 1871/1861 Census for Bradford
« on: Wednesday 12 October 05 11:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace any ancestors of Catherine JUDGE, nee MADDEN, born abt 1856 in Bradford.  To date I have only managed to find her in the 1881 Census.  The details I have are:

1881 – Bradford (RG11/4449, Folio 33, Page 14)
Patrick JUDGE, Lodger (Hd), 36, Mason, Ross County - Ireland
*Cale JUDGE, Wf, 25, ,Bradford – Yorks
Mary E JUDGE, Dau, 5, Scholar, Bradford – Yorks
Andrew JUDGE, Son, 3, , Bradford – Yorks
Sarah E JUDGE, Dau, 1, , Bradford – Yorks

*I have no idea why this is “Cale”, but it is the Catherine JUDGE, nee MADDEN, I’m looking for.

They were married in January 1876, in Bradford.  They also had a son in 1882, called Lawrence.  Brothers Lawrence and Andrew are “Lodgers” on the 1901 Census (RG13/4257, Folio 62, Page 1).

Catherine’s father was Lawrence MADDEN (marriage cert), but I have no idea who her mother was.  It is possible that Lawrence originally came from Ireland.

Could anyone be kind enough to look for Catherine MADDEN on the 1871 and 1861 Census for me, please?

If there is also a Patrick BREHENY (or JUDGE) that was on the 1871 or 1861 Census that was born abt 1845, Ross County, Ireland, that would be a bonus.  According to the marriage certificate, Patrick’s father was called Arthur BREHENY.

(Note: The name BREHENY was “Anglicised’” to JUDGE later.)

David

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) Lookup Requests / Re: 1841/1851 Census for Pocklington
« on: Thursday 15 September 05 10:47 BST (UK)  »
Hi Gabby,

Yes, I am still trying to find other sources for these two.  This is what I have:

By 1881, Ann was a widow.  Francis had died in 1874 Dec q.  She went on to marry a John Best, who was from Durham (according to subsequent Census).

The Census details I have are:

1881 – Skelton (RG11/4842 p.38?)

John BEST, Hd, 34, Iron Mining, not known
Ann BEST, Wf, 36, ,Pocklington – Yorks       (Formerly Ann ALLISON)
John W BEST, S, 12, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
Francis BEST, S, 10, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
George BEST, S, 5, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
Tom BEST, S, 3, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
Polly BEST, Da, 7, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
Ada BEST, Da, 6, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
*Minnie BEST, Da, 8, Scholar, Skelton – Yorks
(* I think this should read 8 months)

1871 – North Kilvington (RG10/4836 p.2)

Francis ALLISON, Hd, 27, Ag Lab, Dunnington - Yorks
Ann ALLISON, Wf, 25, ,Pocklington – Yorks
John W ALLISON, S, 1, , Askham – Yorks

1861 – Sutton on Derwent (RG9/3558 p.10)

Francis ALLISON, Hd, 19, Farm Servant, Dunnington – Yorks

I know that Francis married Anne Elizabeth WILKINSON the June quarter of 1867.  I also believe that I have found the right Francis ALLISON on LDS being christened on 21st March 1842.  This has his parents as John ALLISON and Barbara.  What I would like to be able to confirm is that Francis’ parents are indeed John and Barbara on the 1851 Census, if possible.

I could not find an Anne Elizabeth WILKINSON on the 1861 Census.  I do think I have the right one on LDS being christened 5th Jan 1844. This has her parents as being John and Mary.  Again the 1851 Census could verify this for me.

If you are able to help here, too, that would be great.

Kind regards

David

« on: Sunday 07 August 05 02:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace who Alfred Louis PARKER’s ancestors were.  I have the following Census information below:

1901 - Headingley

Eliza Ann PARKER, Wf, 45, ,Colton – Yorks

1891 – Headingley Cum Burley

Sarah CROSTHWAITE, Wd, 60, , Leeds – Yorks

1871 – Templenewsan
Eliza Ann CROSTHWAITE, 15, Nurse Dom. Serv., Whitkirk – Yorks
(I have a lot of information on the Crosthwaite’s)

William and Eliza Ann were married in the Leeds district, September quarter of 1876.

William PARKER would have been about 23 in the 1871 Census.  Unfortunately, PARKER being a common name is proving difficult to track him down.

Can anyone please have a look in the Leeds/Wakefield/Huddersfield areas for a possible William PARKER, probably in the “domestic service” industry?

Hi Pauline/Tanja,

On his birth cert, there is no mention of a father, only his mother, Caroline.  This is most likely why this Edward was born in the Poor House at Huddersfield - unmarried mother, very taboo at that time.

I can't help but think that this may be wrong, as it contradicts all the Census' details about his birth place.

The 1861 would make sense to me, a) because birthplace location is, I believe, in the same area as Mosley/Oldham, and b) - a longshot - the fact that he became a Publican in later life.  Influenced by David Wass in his early years?

If he is on the 1851 Census anywhere, that just may tie things up.........or will it!  :-

Thank you both for your responses.

Regards

David

Census Lookup and Resource Requests / 1861/1851 Census for Lancs/Yorks for SAVILLE
« on: Tuesday 02 August 05 12:28 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I am trying to trace who Edward SAVILLE’s ancestors were.  I have the following Census information below:

1901 - Sheffield
Edward SAVILLE, 54, Publican, Mosley – Lancs
Isabella SAVILLE, 50, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

1891 – Pennington
Edward SAVILLE, 44, Licensed Victualer, Mosley – Lancs
Isabella SAVILLE, 40, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs
John E SAVILLE, 16, Assists at home, Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

1881 – Ashton-under-Lyne
Edward SAVILLE, 34, Coal Miner, Mosley – Yorks
Isabella SAVILLE, 30, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs
John E SAVILLE, 5, , Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

1871 – (Unable to read Census page)
Edward SAVILLE, 24, Coal Miner, Lees, Oldham – Lancs
Isabella SAVILLE, 20, ,Ashton-under-Lyne – Lancs

Edward and Isabella were married on 28 March 1869, Ashton-u-Lyne, in the presence of Patrick Murphy and Alice Roberts.

I also have a copy of a birth cert for an Edward SAVILLE, but this I believe is probably incorrect, as it has him being born in Huddersfield Poor House, in 1847.

Isabella (JONES) is in Aston-u-Lyne in the 1861 Census.

I really have no idea where Edward was prior to 1869.  Can anyone please help with look-ups in the 1861 and 1851 Census from either Lancashire (or Yorkshire), particularly in those areas mentioned above?

Regards

David

I am trying to get some more information on the family of Ann Elizabeth WILKINSON (b. 1843).  I have details of who she married - a certain Francis ALLISON - and subsequent descendants.

I believe that her parents may have been called John and Mary.

If anyone can help with information about her family from these Census, that would be great.
