London and Middlesex / Re: West Smithfield Churches

There are a number of churches in West Smithfield so it might be easier to find what you are looking for if you knew what the parish was otherwise it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. This is a map from 1862 which might give you an idea of how big the area is:

I'm sure if you shared your ancestors details on here someone might be able to find a baptism

Thanks Goldie61, so do you think it reads ‘within” bare alley? As an abbreviation and misspelling of White Bear Alley.
I found a list of streets, alleys etc on this ward map https://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/PORT1.htm no.46 is white bear alley

Thanks also Bookbox I did wonder is this an abbreviation for Rosemary Lane, and thanks for the tip about posting more of the page, this was my first post in this forum so didn’t want to fall foul of the rules and post too much of the parish register

Hello

I'm looking for some help with deciphering some place names on parish records from St Botolph Aldgate, London.
The locations are noted at the end of the line and I'm assuming are in the Aldgate area but I can't decipher them except maybe for the word alley, but the plus sign is throwing me.

The original records can be found on Ancestry:
Leonard Redburn  burial - 9th July 1665
Leonard Redburn baptism - 5th April 1663 } possibly the same alley
Sarah Redburn baptism - 3rd January 1664}

Any help is greatly appreciated

Good point they could be brother and sister, the pictures are separate (and too large to post here) the ages are noted on the back of the portraits

I recently inherited some pictures drawn by Charles Herve of Regent Street, London of 2 individuals from Hull.
They are Joseph Townsend aged 32 and Sarah Townsend aged 31 produced in September 1838 with their address given as 6 Regent Square, Sykes Street, Hull.

I've not been able to find any information about them and the occupants of 6 Regent Sq on the 1841 census are not the Townsends. I’d be grateful of some help on any information about this couple as they don’t appear to be related to the relative I inherited these pictures from. I’m also curious as to why this couple came to London to have their portraits painted in London, was the Sculcoates area of Hull at this time a wealthy area? What line of work could they have possibly be involved in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I’ve recently found out I’m related to these Pinckneys, did you manage to find any more information on them?

Thanks Carole  :)

They are in the hackney Workhouse in 1838/1839....
Mary Manley, 29, admitted 28 Nov 1838, discharged 11 Feb 1839
John Manley, 3, ditto
Wm Manley,13mths, ditto.

I assume she was pregnant with Charles James at this time?

A possibility for William George Jr in 1851....
2 George Place St James Square. Class: HO107; Piece: 1485; Folio: 164; Page: 13
William Loyns, 30 french polisher, b. London
William Holby, 25, fish monger, b. London
George Manly, 16, errand boy, b. London.

Jo  :)

Thanks Carole and Jo, I'll look these up later tonight. I'm not surprised re the Workhouse submission.

Jo - (William) George snr was also in the Workhouse (on the same page) although he was admitted a few days earlier on 10 Nov 1838 but discharged on the same day as the rest of the family, although it says his age was 30 on admission but 31 on discharge even though his birthday is in August

I'm not sure about the entry in St James, seems a bit far to go for a family that stayed in the Shoreditch area and he's not related to the other 2 people

Thanks Lindsey. Mary was very much routed in the East End in the Shoreditch area so I don't think the connection in Westminster is correct.

But thanks for looking
