The Common Room / Re: Political records from the 1820s Dublin
« on: Tuesday 05 April 16 22:07 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Eadaoin. I am curious about the reason my Irish ancestor was sent to Australia in 1830. New information has come to light implying he might have had political commitments necessitating his departure from Ireland. He was sent away from Dublin as a remittance man and sailed to Australia with people of interest.

There is much about his life that does not make sense.

The most interesting is his Obituary and secondly, instructions to place his death notice in Dublin, New York and Melbourne papers. On the face of it, my ancestor's life was not high profile or particularly interesting hence placing his death notice in papers throughout the world is interesting.

How do I find out about political involvement in Ireland during the 1820s? His father may have been similarly involved. They were Catholic and lived in Capel/Merchant Quay area of Dublin. My ancestor remained a devout Catholic; not an easy thing to do in Launceston, Tasmania at the time.

The woman he married from Cork seems to have come from a similar background.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Is it possible to find out about political membership and activity from the 1820s? Records from membership of say, the Catholic Emancipation League, Land League or the IRB?

« on: Friday 25 January 13 06:00 GMT (UK)  »
I am doing some research on Cowdenbeath and Central Fife during the 20th Century and I need some anecdotal information about Catholics  in that area during those years. I have looked at records and stats but I would like some descriptions of individuals' experience. I hope someone can help me this request. Thanks

I am researching the life of Catholics in the Cowdenbeath area during the Twentieth Century with particular emphasis on the period between 1930 - 1980. I am looking for social history/ anecdotal accounts rather than stats or historical records. Can anyone help?
