I have been asked to try and help a fellow scouter who has an interest in all things historical to o with scouting mainly in Kent but in the UK too, he has a  memory board with loads of interesting stuff on it.

But only the name F J Hunter to go on and that when he got his wood badge he lived in Streatham in 1922/23 I have him all over the world on this board but don't know how old he was or when he dies.  I have found other hunters in Ribblesdale road, in the 1911 census and in electoral rolls going right up to 1962 but not this guy.

Has anybody had any luck researching at the national archives on scouting.

All the time my mother was alive she didnt want me delving in to her fathers family. I found out after she died that her dad had been married before and had 3 children the 4th child bore his name but had a different father on the certificate. He divorced and re married with in the year and had nothing to do with his 1st family at all even though they all lived in the same area. My aunt and uncle had no Idea about it but I suspect my mum did.

He father got kicked out the army too for drinking on duty.

Kent / Re: How is "Plaxtol" pronounced ?

I'd put my money on it being a miss-hearing of Plaistow Bromley - because it isn't that far away from Lewisham.

Just a thought - because someone says they were born in Plaistow doesn't mean that they were baptised there. I was born in Rochester but I wasn't baptised there ....

Carole

Just read this and it is almost a straight road from lee through grove park to the  plaistow area of bromley it has its own church and cemetary. Hope this helps. also if you carry on past plaistow you will come to chislhurst the roads havent changed much in a hundred yeards or more.

Armed Forces / Re: 2nd Life Grds help 1891 census

I do need to go to kew but for the forseable that is not going to be possible :( I was hopping that someone on here might have knowlege of the life guards or possibly the records. I know its a long shot.

But also the census returns for 1891 Hyde park barracks, as i think they might be there. but i need to possibly go line by line, as they dont show up on ancestory.

or any knowlege of a conflict that would have taken them away from the barracks in 1891 only a  year before he allegadly gets booted out.

Armed Forces / 2nd Life Grds help 1891 census
« on: Tuesday 13 October 09 21:53 BST (UK)  »
My Great grandfather was a Corpral in the 2nd life guards based in Spital Barracks Windsor on his marriage certificate in 1888
In 1890 when my great Aunt Gertrude was born the family had moved to Hyde Park Barracks Knightsbridge as this is where her birth was registerd he looks like he has been demoted to a trooper.

I can't find them on the 1891 census but was wondering if anyone had the records for these soldier or any ideas of how to get his records if they survie. He is not in the Army in 1892 when grandfather is born so i guess he got busted out. Apparently he had some sort of drink problem according to my Mother.

His name was Joseph Gayford Turner (gayford was his middle name) he was born in 1861 in Attleborough Norfolk.
His wife was born Maria White 1861 in Windsor
they would have had the one child living with them gertrude Grace Turner 25th nov 1890.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Perhaps the 1911 census hadn't come on line when the researchers were doing their stuff, but there is an Emily Freeman bn 1857 Petworth in East Preston district (the district Tarring comes under I think)

Does she have any children living with her? I dont have acess to the 1911 census at the moment. Maybe the third marriage was not legal.

Really interesting, especially that she had been infected twice. Which possibly means that the father had caught it from one of his previous wives (or a casual encounter?)

I wonder if any of his  earlier children had also suffered the same fate. ( I see that possibility has already been mentioned!) occurred .
An hour wasn't enough for this search
Spring

Could it also be the cause of His blindness, maybe if we go back over his family there will be big gaps of children born and dying young. Maybe they both brought it through both the lines.

Was quietly amused by how many children he had over his many wives.
My husband is the eldest of 7 and his mother is also Blind. Always joked it was a form of hobby she could get involved in with out being sighted.

(also Dorton house Blind school is a lovely as it looks. My 2 sighted children have private swimming lessons there every week. Mother in law should have gone there in the 50s but her mother wanted her home for weekends and the school wouldn't allow it only home at the end of term. They do now though. Katie Prices Son goes there too so they have had a fair bit of publicity over the last few years too.) sorry totally off topic just thought you might like some more info :)
