Lesley I know nothing about Janet. I was given her and George Salmonds names by other researchers. I had only known about Peter Salmond and hadn't known anything about his birth till then. I don't know Janet or George's ages, birth dates deaths parents so hadn't tried ScotlandsPeople till I could narrow things down more. May just have to bite the bullet and see what I can find.
Forfarian thank you for your information. I will let you know if I can get back as far as you have gone and see if there is a connection

Hi JM. Thanks for your reply. I will try to get to the Qld State Archives. They are a fair way from me and they don't open of an evening and only one Saturday per month but will be worth a trip. Thanks again

Thank you Whiteout 7.  Yes I had seen that and written to Judy Webster.  He is apparently on the list twice.  She said just because there is provision for the name of the ship etc, it may be that those details are actually not listed, so I am yet to send both fees off for 2 searches until I exhaust other avenues.

Thank you for your reply. I was hoping any descendants of John may know more about George and Jane and the rest of the family including my line through their son Peter. I know he married a Janet Forsyth but she died after a couple of children one of whom was my Great Great Grandmother. He later remarried a Jane Aitken née Gartshore and his family including a granddaughter Jessie Haddow came to Australia in 1886. I understand this may not have been going to be a permanent arrangement and some of the family were back in Scotland in early 1900s - peter senior's wife Jane and some sons one of which being Peter junior but I haven't found Peter senior with them nor his death there or in Australia so its a mystery. I wondered if there had been any correspondence between family members the contents of which may have been spoken about and handed down. Small chance I know but I have to ask. Peter junior's wife and all their children died in Australia. It appears Peter junior may have remarried in Scotland but again - unsure. Peter senior's granddaughter Jessie remained in Australia married a Scot from Brechin and was my Great Grandmother.
Thank you for the information you have given and anything else you can provide.

I love your sense of humour!  Maybe I should get a pipe and a Sherlock hat while I'm at it.
I am off to the National Archives in Brisbane on Saturday for some details on August Barteks in Australia. At least their microfiche machines are hooked up to printers. Wish me luck!
Thanks again Beg. PS. Where in the world are you?
Thanks again

Hi Beg
Thank you very much for all the time you have put into this for me. I am very grateful for your help.

I am in Brisbane, Queensland Australia so it's not easy to pop over to Germany!

I have heard of the LDS FHC's and although googling shows there are some in Brisbane the information appears to be outdated and a few months ago when trying to go further on my Scottish side i had no luck finding their location here. I will try again today to see if I can find one and if they have the resources here to search records

Thanks again
