Scotland / Re: Record of Birth to single mother?
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 14:36 GMT (UK)  »
Just to update:

I've found her! On checking my own records, her birth date was shown as 1873, so I guess her mother put the wrong age on the census form!?

She was born in Govan, Lanark. I found her on SP.

So thanks yet again for the guidance.

Thanks for the replies!

I've followed your advice, but I still didn't hit it lucky. At least I have a few of the records to view now. One of the records did show as 'illegitimate", but I don't think its the one.

The dates and names should be accurate as they are coming from the newly released Co. Down census from 1911. The two Isabellas have caused confusion when I have been checking the family from local sources, but I now know that they were aged 64 and 36 in April 1911.

I'll keep trying, thanks again.

Scotland / Record of Birth to single mother?
« on: Wednesday 31 December 08 01:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm usually in the Ireland section.

I'm following a link from Co. Down in Ireland to Isabella Neill, born in Scotland (don't know location) about 1874/75. Her mother was also Isabella and shows on the local 1911 Irish census as being single, so I'm guessing that she maybe went to Scotland to have the child.

Are births without a possible father recorded in the same way? I had a look at Scotland's People, but without being sure if I was getting much success for my credits. Any suggestions?

TIA

Hi Emma,

My Great Grandfather lived in Ireton Street in the 1800s, but I doubt if the paper would show stuff from then. He was from Ireland and was a ship's carpenter. He came back to live in Ireland.

Peter

Newsam is still a family in that area. If you look at:

http://www.thephonebook.bt.com/

and search for them in Newcastle, Co. Down - that's the area that now includes Maghera.

Hi Frances,

Thank you for the information.

I think that's the same John (Armitage) Chippendall - he died in 1919 aged 83. He was an army man and served in India, so I guess its all the same family. His son Charles was, I think, in the Royal Engineers.

The only other bits I have are from FreeBMD - John was married in Pancras in 1864. There was a Charles born in West London in 1861, but my local church records have Charles' death in 1951 aged 70, so that might not be him.

I don't have a Charlotte!

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the replies - it might be just a slip of the keyboard.....

The Chippendall I have, his father was in the IOM volunteers in the 1800s and in the British Army in (possibly) the Boer War and/or India. Father and son are both buried in Ireland.

There is also a Lucy who died in 1902, so that could be the same lady! I understand the family were originally English.

Down / Re: Ballygowan Burial
« on: Thursday 04 January 07 12:36 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Karina,

Walkingshaw would still be a name from that general area - I looked at www.bt.com and found one in Saintfield which is not too far from Ballygowan. Perhaps they could help.

Regarding the burial, there is a large Presbyterian Church in Ballygowan with an attached cemetry:

__http://www.presbyterianireland.org/congregations/ballygowan.html

I'm sure they will have a record of who is buried there, I see there is an email address. I think the nearest C of I church would be at either Kilmood or Saintfield - guess Saintfield would be best bet going on what Pat found.

Hope this helps

Hi,

Anyone have Chippendall in IOM listings? I have one married to part of my family in Ireland.

TIA.
