England / Re: German Ancestors in the North of England
« on: Sunday 03 August 14 19:07 BST (UK)  »
I am related to the Shy butchers from Blyth. My grandmother on my father's side was Winifred Florence Shy, her father was George Charles Shy born in Goole (1868/9), his father George (1844) who came from Kunzelsau. They started in Goole and then in about 1873/4 they apparently were advised to move north. They went to Bylth where I gather they did quite well with George Charles's brother Alfred also opening his own shop. I believe it is his family shop which is the only surviving Shy Butchers in Blyth. I have had a little contact with Alfred's family and I think there was a Shy butcher's shop in Scotland also. if anyone is interested i do have some more info.

Groom, that is interesting and may be possible, worth investigating. I know that documents are not always very accurate but it says that george's application date was Oct 1863 but the 1881 census says that son Charles was born in Germany in 1865.....did it take a few years for the application to be approved .....they married in Goole in 1867. I will investigate more at the weekend

Wow, I am overwhelmed with the super fast responses to this post. I think the Lena Krafft marriage is my George. I believe they came from Wutterburg in 186something. I have heard that she was a princess of sorts although i cannot confirm this. They married in Yorkshire and had a child george in 1868, I also think that they had a son Charles out of wedlock earlier. Any help would be super. Thank you. Sarah
