The Common Room / Re: Cartoon Maker -
« on: Saturday 01 August 09 11:46 BST (UK)  »
What a hoot Dave - before the move to Oz in the 1960s I worked for a stationery company in Edinburgh that made those wee boxes to put a bit of wedding cake in.  The factory was split into lots of unions and that particular lot were the boxmakers, not to be confused with bookmakers although they ran a pretty good sweep.  The cardboard to make the boxes was delivered by another union from the floor above, one particular lassie had to make the bows to go on the wee boxes and that was a different union again.  Just to finish it off, the packers' union gathered up all the wee boxes and put them into bigger cartoons, maybe.  No wonder Bettyanne is confused - so was I then!  Gillian

I have discs of BMDs in Victoria, Australia from 1836 onwards but no Matthew Davidson appears for 1854.  Your post mentions two by that name but the death years don't agree with the newspaper report of 1854.  If there was a drowning, it's likely there would have been a magisterial inquest (have a similar thing with a member of my family who migrated here and drowned in a creek).  Our State Library in Melbourne keeps the microfilms of all Victorian newspapers so I could try there if you can confirm the year.  Any information would be helpful.  There's lots of info available in Oz if you know where to start looking.  I'm no expert but will have a go.

I was born in Dunbar and know the East Lothian/Berwickshire area very well.  Now in Oz.  Happy to help where I can.

Berwickshire / Re: SMITH/BROWN !! Chirnside, Cockburnspath 1800-1860

Hi Pam
I don't know if there's any connection with your Browns as I have only investigated the direct line with my lot but the areas you mentioned are virtually the same as mine.  It might pay to check out the siblings in each of my generations to see if that helps.  My Browns are from Edrom, Chirnside, Reston, Blackburnrigg and Co'path - all very close to each other.

Earliest I have is William Brown b. 1788, married Janet Wait.  Children:  William b 1788 (my line), James b 1792, Janet b 1785, Mary b 1781.

My William above married Alison Laurie.  Their children were:
Mary b 1816, Alison b 1823, Helen b 1825, James b 1825, William b 1828.

Maybe you might find something from this.  Good luck - it's very frustrating with a common surname.

Thanks Emma
I don't think anyone knew their correct age in those days but they're both definitely my lot.

South Africa / Alice Winter, died Spigs Rest, Cape Colony 1903

Would like to find info on Alice (nee Winter).  She was only 27 when she died.  Married to (I think) John Phillips, had 3 daughters, Olive, Dorothy and another (unknown name).  I have her birth details - just looking for info on cause of death and relatives left.

Thanks for the response re Robina Winter.  She would have only been 6 years old in 1851 so can't go back any further with her on that front.  Appreciate your reply.

1851 census.  Seeking help for a dead end.  Robina Winter was my great grandmother but cannot trace her parents.  I was informed she appears in the 1851 Ayton census at the home of her grandfather whose name could be Robert Winter.  Would appreciate a lookup of the census to see if this information is correct and whether there is any mention of her grandmother.
