Thanks for your input majm, I will certainly track down some of those books & see how much further we can get. I was ecstatic to find Thomas' marriage in Ireland - all leads pointed there & it was purely a stroke of luck I found them. Will keep you posted. Regards, Kerry

In 1815 the regiment that Thomas enlisted in was doing duty in Ireland.
Bridget Leaver/Lever/Levy died in Sydney in 1826 aged 26. She is listed in the Sydney musters as being Thomas' wife & him as a Trumpeter in the 48th Regiment of Foot. Thomas & Bridget arrived in Australia on board the barque "Matilda", as part of the 3rd Fleet to assist Gov. Macquarie keep law & order in the Colony. On Thomas' registration of service with 48th Regiment of Foot he is listed as 13yrs 215 days of age, he is from Bolton, & enlisted at Salport. There are several registrations for the birth of a Bridget Gaynor so I haven't worked out who her parents are yet. I've been researching this couple for years. Hope this helps. Regards, Kerry

Greetings to all who are researching Bridget & Thomas Leaver - have I got news for you! After much research I discovered Bridget's maiden name, where & when she married Thomas. He was 17, she 15. Thomas enlisted when he was 13 & was a trumpheter in the 48th Regiment of Foot &, as many of you know, he came to Australia on Board "Matilda" to assist Gov. Lachaln Macquarie with law & order in the colony. He  left Australia in 1824 (I know some  sites have him staying in Australia) after the  regiment has served their 7 years here bound for India. He was discharged whilst in India as he had developed opthalmia (problems with both eyes) & returned to Bolton, Lancashire, England. I haven't established yet whether he married again or stayed "single"- he was, after all, a widower, but probably wasn't aware of that. The story of their life together, then with Ann makes for interesting reading & I am only too happy to share what I have. Bridget's life in Sydney became rougher than rough, she abandoned her child to the orphanage, became a prostitute, and died in 1826 of "who knows what". She was originally buried in Sydney where Central Station now stands, however many years ago her remains were moved & interred in Botany Cemetery near Sydney, NSW. Regards to all, Kerry

Australia / Re: Tilby/James mystery still unsolved - FYI those who helped before

Hello, I am researching the Davis family on behalf of my cousins. Their grandfather was William Albert Davis (1875-1976) who married (1) Sophia Allen & (2) Miriam Annie James. Their youngest son, Ronald William Davis was my cousins' Dad. I have been able to trace Miriam forward to when she died as Miriam Annie Burns, died Bathurst 1963. Like you, I have been intrigued by the Tilby name on Alfred Davis' marriage certificate to Mary Wolfenden. The only Tilby I can locate in Dubbo around the time of Alf's birth is a Stanley Tilby. Given that Albert was born in 1908 and Miriam married William in 1910 suggests that Albert was, as stated on his original birth certificate, illegitimate. Then William Davis came along, married Miriam & reared Alfred as his own. Alfred's birth certificate states "evidence has been furnished that the full name of the within mentioned Alfred Stanley James is Alfred Stanley James Davis". Given that Alfred's second christian name is Stanley gives indication that Stanley (coupled with the Tilby name on Alf's marriage certificate) Tilby was Alf's birth father. On that certificate Miriam states she is from Richmond, Victoria and that her address is 4 Park Road (no town mentioned). It could be that Miriam wanted to create a smoke screen around herself and her baby so gave false information. The trail of these people goes cold at Dubbo with no further info about them. On one doco William Davis' parentage is listed as William & Sarah & on another John & Sarah - maybe he was William John or vice versa - thus creating another mystery. I am happy to share what info I have - maybe together we can solve these mysteries.  Look forward to hearing from you. Regards, Kerry Payne (Mrs.) My private email is (*)

I am also a descendant of Bridget & Thomas. My lineage is from Anne's marriage to John Hurley. I do have quite a bit of info which I am happy to share. Bridget came free on the "Matilda" as the "wife" of Thomas Leaver, a trumpheter with the 48th Regiment of Foot which had been stationed in Ireland and was then sent to Australia. Whether Bridget & Thomas ever married is debateable because on arrival in Australia she was only 16-17, & possibly saw the trip to Asutralia as a way out of the poor life in Ireland.  Anne was born in 1820 & was placed in the orphanage in 1825. Bridget died of "who-knows-what" in 1826 after having lived a life of grog, men etc. after arriving in Australia. The information you have about the murder of Happy Filler is all correct, and the acquital came about because although they were as guilty as sin, they were all too drunk to remember exactly what happened & who did what.
Anne's 3 marriages were: (1) John Hurley, (2) Thomas Kelly, & (3) William Linford/Lynford. She lived a colourful life & ended up living in Braidwood where her house is now classified by the National Trust. She is buried in Braidwood cem. Ann had various affairs with bushrangers over the years. She had a total of 12 children that we know of. In her latter years she seems to have redeemed her reputation.
