Family History Beginners Board / Re: National Probate Calendar query

Thanks alot Dawn for clarifying the Probate terminology and process for me. I think will make certain Wills worth ordering as they may give more information regards my Scots and English ancestors.

Thanks for that Diddy
That gives a good explanation of the records and how to order copies of a Will. It also explains about the term 'Administration' and that the figure quoted is the total amount of the person's estate. That those named are the Executors therefore not necessarily the main benefactors as i did wonder as they did not appear to be family!

Doesn't however explain what 'closed' means...any ideas?

Family History Beginners Board / National Probate Calendar query
« on: Sunday 20 January 13 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I have just rejoined Ancestry and wow how things have changed. Found so many more great archives to access, which brings me to the National Probate Calendar. I have found entries for a number of people in my tree but i am not sure about the wording used.

I read some where that if it states 'Administration' then the person died without a Will and its the relatives applying to be able to divide up the estate - presumably it must have been of some worth, is that correct?

If it states for example..John Brown died 22.8.1936 Probate 22.9.1936 London to Samuel Brown retired sales executive...does this mean the copy of Probate is to be found in London and the sole beneficiary was Samuel Brown or could Samuel Brown be the executor of the Will?

Also if it were to state...John Brown died 22.8.1936 Confirmation of Samuel Brown retired sales executive. Sealed London 22.9.1938.....what does 'confirmation' and 'sealed' mean?

I believe you can order the actual Will for about £5? Does anyone have the link for that please?

Many thanks in advance
Elaine  :)

Dumfriesshire / Building Inscription

A cottage that belonged to the Williamsons and Murray's on the High Street in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire has an inscription above the door which looks like IW then a diamond shape and NG and 1710 underneath. It could be a 1 and it looks like a backwards N. Underneath that it has 'Rebuilt by Jn Murray 1822' (John Murray who i know about)

Any ideas? Thanks in advance :)

Yes..you just imagine that everyone was married in their early 20's but maybe they were just waiting for the 'right one'. Had a moment of panic over that census..it rung a bell but couldn't find my copy..then found it..that's the problem with using multiple sites..or more likely its my lack of organisation... :-\

I am following Charles Williamson born on 14th and baptised on 23rd December 1825 who is my Great great grandfather and married Margaret Murray in 1862 in Liverpool. I have ordered their marriage certificate to confirm dates and names etc. I am a bit wary as Charles would have been about 37yrs old then so possibly it was their second marriage???

Wow!!! Thank you Monica...! I have the marriage so the banns information is new thank you. The children i have, and i looked at the 1841 census for English Street but the ages put me off a bit but i guess they weren't always accurate and i will have another look at this info. Also i will have a look at the link by cupcake.

Why didn't i join this forum earlier! It was recommended by some one and they were right - it is full of very knowledgeable and helpful people  :)

Thank you for a warm welcome and for all your responses.

JSHC is right, the extract is from the OPR's sorry i didn't make that clear by not putting any dates! I guess i was hoping for more information about their parents. The marriage took place on 1st March 1813.

James Williamson was born c.1793 in Moniaive and his wife Margaret Kerr c.1791. I am not sure when they died either! So back to the drawing board..i will have to try and locate them in the census to try and narrow down a few possible years of death or if I can find a memorial inscription...!   :D
