Still looking into the Lifton family tree..........
The Liftons being Jews is an interesting one, I am aware that Jews have come to England since 1000AD.
I was told the Liftons ended up in Pembrokeshire as they were Whalers from Nantucket.
There were Sisson families who were Quaker/Whalers (mentioned more below).
I was told in our family that our surname originated from the village of Lifton in Devon.
That they were Devonshire Sailors, a lot of our ancestors are Sailors/Mariners etc...
I was told that we were also related to the Devonshire Arundells.
Supposedly Arundell is the original Cornish surname for Lifton?
Another family member mentioned we were linked to the Poco A Poco Listons of Scotland.
Going back to European links there was a Clyfton (I seen Lifton spelt Clifton) family who lived in Belgium in the 1500s they were religious and had fled England.
Afterwards they moved to the USA.
I have noted that there appears to be a trend of different spellings of the name of Lifton -
Listun - (From Bristol, England whos name then became Sisson/Lisson in the USA) does that mean TON changed to SON. I have seen records in the USA spelt Lisson and they could pass for Lifton.
Lyston
Lidston
Listone
Listoun
Lisson
Sisson
All settling in the USA in the 1600s and then many variations of the same surname.
A lot of Scottish Listons/Listone/Listoun were persecuted and fled to Ireland then to USA.
There is a lot of records of US Navy and other Military regarding the different spellings.
