Lizzie, thank you so much for finding the Chadwick connection.  Excellent work :-).

That will provide some extra leads that might help untangle the complicated Buckley web in Saddleworth.

Thanks,

Paul

Hello, thank you very much for your help.

I think that is a very good match.  It is always creates some doubt when details like occupation and age (1 month vs 1 year appear).  John's occupation was manufacturer on his marriage certificate in 1839, and woollen weaver on his daughter Alice's birth in 1844, which are similar to clothier in this census record.  I was surprised to see him as a publican on son Sam's birth certificate in April 1841.

What do you think his residence is on the census entry that you found?  Acres??

It isn't Hey Bank, the address that he gave when he registered Sam's birth 5 weeks before the census.  I checked the enumerator's schedule and that doesn't mention Hey Bank.  I also looked at every address in book 8 and there is no Hey Bank.  It must be in one of the other books covering Delph.  It seems strange that they moved weeks after the birth.

Thanks again for your help,

Paul

Hello, Lizzie and Heywood - thanks for your speedy replies.

I will look at your findings ASAP.

This is a link to the correct John:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/199194609/person/432659968802/facts

Ironically the first, incorret link that I posted is to a tree to coolect information on "the wrong Buckleys" to help avoid confusion.  It appears not to be working.

Thanks again,

Paul

Hello, I cannot find my ancestor John Buckley on the 1841 census.  I hope that someone here can help (please).

He was John Buckley.  I have found him on the 1851, 1861 and 1871 census (in Oldham) which all show he was born c1810 in Saddleworth (or Quick).

He married Hannah Buckley (minor) at Rochdale parish church on 09 May 1839.  The censuses show that Hannah was also born in Saddleworth (or Quick).  From 1851 and 1861 her year of birth is c1820, but c1813 from 1871 and c1818 from 1881.

The 1851 census shows several children, including John Buckley (age 11 born Quick) and Samuel Buckley (age 9 born Quick).

I have a birth certificate for Sam Buckley born 24 April 1841 at Hey Bank, nr. Delph son of John publican & Hannah Buckley formerly Buckley.  This birth is just weeks before the 1841 census was taken.  However I have looked on the Ancestry census indexes and failed to find them.  Can anyone help please?

John is on my Ancestry tree here if it helps:  https://www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/202600237/person/272639749806/facts

Thanks.

Cathy, thank you very much for your help.  I now see him on Ancestry.  I missed him with my search by name and gave up searching the original registers page by page for Manchester street.  Ancestry would be better if it had a street index.

Now I have his place of birth and another view of his age I can start to explore how he might be connected to "our John", also born Saddleworth.

Thanks again

Paul

Lancashire / John Buckley - 1871 census Oldham
« on: Wednesday 12 February 25 07:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I am struggling to find someone on the 1871 census in Oldham.  I hope that someone can help.

Probate records show that John Buckley, of 183 Manchester Street, Oldham, died 20 Sep 1873 at 183 Manchester Street.
His will mentions:
- sons John Gaunt Buckley (executor) and Lewis Buckley.
- daughters Sarah (wife of Edward Swindells) and Esther (wife of Samuel Horrocks).
Witnesses William Wrigley of Manchester Street & John Buckley of 148 Middleton Road.
The will itself is not dated.  It was proved on 31 October 1873.

I believe the he is the John Buckley in the GRO index in 1873Q4 age 60 Oldham RD (8d/423) - so born c1813.

I would like to find him on the 1871 census.

I have looked for him on Ancestry but not found a good match.  Buckley is a very common name and there are lots of possibilities.

My ancestor, John Buckley (the executor of his will) and wife Hannah, are 148 Middleton Road (RG10/4097/43).

There is another John and Hannah Buckley at 80 Middleton Road (RG10/4104/65).

Please could someone help me find John Buckley of Manchester Street in 1871.

Thanks for your help.

Neale many thanks for finding these records.  Thanks also to Cass for looking through them.  I need to make time to go through them.  They appear to be great.

The UK army records state the Jacob Tittensor spent 5 years in Australia and was discharged on 3rd January 1838 with a "broken constitution" after 28 years 129 days service.  If he arrived on the Lady Harewood in 1832 then 5 years would take him to the end of his service.  It will be great to find out a bit more about where he was (Emu Plains and the Cox’s River Stockade).

Thank you very much for your help,

Paul

Maddy, thanks very much for the information about the Lady Harewood and the surgeon's journal.

It is amazing what can be found if you know where to look.

There is also a little about the Lady Harewood's three voyages to Australia on wikipedia.

Thanks again,

Paul

Hello Maddy, thanks very much for your reply.

Unfortunately I don't know what years he was in Australia.

He was in the 4th Regiment of Foot, so that makes it the 1832 voyage.

Thanks very much for your help :-)
