Lanarkshire / Gorbals parish register
« on: Wednesday 09 November 16 00:12 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking at the parish register of deaths in Gorbals in 1835. The register gives the date of the death, gender and name. After the age is a category labeled "Lair", I think. In that column I see entries like Hector, C.G., W, Lech Serv, Easton, McDonald, #55, Barr.  It's not maiden name, because these terms are next to male names as well.  Has anyone come across something like this?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Lanarkshire / Re: John Mclay and Agnes Craig.

Dear grandma,

I apologize for not posting sooner.  Health problems.

I've lost track of the questions in this thread, so my answer might not be helpful.  Agnes Craig married John McLay on 9 Jun 1871 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire.  John was the son of Richard McLay and Catherine McFarlane.  I believe Agnes was the daughter of William Craig and Jean O'Neil.  Their children were Richard, Archibald, Jane Neil, Catherine McFarlane and William McLay.  My marriage data comes from the parish register.  Richard's birth is in the International Genealogical Index.  There's a tree contributed to Ancestry.com that says Archibald was adopted, and his mother was Isabella Wallace.  I found the family in the 1881 census in Hamilton with John's father Richard and the 1901 census in Holytown, Bothwell with Agnes' father William Craig.

My knowledge of Agnes Craig's grandparents, John Craig and Mary Gartshore, is more extensive.  Let me know if that is where your interest lies.  I promise to answer more promptly.

Renfrewshire / Re: Clarks of Mearns

Dear sheenamac,

I apologize for not responding soon.  Health problems.

My MANDERSONs lived in Gorbals.  Robert Manderson and Susan Jack had at least 5 children:  Janet, Margaret, James, Robert and Susanna.  I've only been able to trace Janet, Margaret and Robert.  Margaret married Thomas Pollock and lived in Glasgow.   Robert married Mary Ritchie and lived in Barony, Glasgow and Dennistoun.  My ancestress, Janet Manderson, married Adam Clark/Clerk 9 Dec 1815 in Neilston.  Their 8 children were all born in Mearns.  The family had moved to Lanarkshire by the 1861 census.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

How many souls did these communities have?  If there are only 25 Howies in town, then Susanna must belong to one of them (or is a cousin who came on a visit and stayed).  If there are 150, we're on shakier ground.  Just wondering.

Hi Forgarian,
I have no more information on the Howies.  I'll note your information and hope I can someday help out there.  I'm in Hawaii and don't have access to material that is not online.  By the bye, my Gartshore line shows that the family stuck to the Scottish tradition of naming the first son after the father's father for at least five generations.  They were not consistent in subsequent children, although the wife's father's name does appear among the children eventually.

Aloha SoniJ,
Thanks for your information on the origins of the Gartshores of Middle Blairlin.  I was relying on Graham's research.  Several years ago, he was kind enough to pass on a Gartshore gedcom.  Some of his data I have been able to confirm through my own research, but, again, my research opportunities are somewhat limited.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: area of Lesmahagow

Thanks so much, everyone.  This is a line for which I have very little information, so every bit helps.  There were two couples named John Stewart and Jane Tennant.  They were married within a few years of each other.  They both appear to have spent some time in Ayrshire.  Disentangling them has been difficult.  Pinpointing where they were living year by year will help.

Mahalo nui loa (thanks big and long)

Thank you, Ambly.  I thought the end might be Knowe.  I've come across that name before.  Locating my ancestors has been a great ongoing lesson in geography.

The attached is from a baptismal record of Alexander Stewart, son of John Stewart and Janet Tennant, born in 1831 and baptized in Lesmahagow.  I don't want to post the whole entry and violate copyright.  I've searched Scotland's Places and googled, but I can't figure out the name of the place where Alexander was born.  It is also the birthplace of the child above, but the name isn't written any more clearly there.  I would appreciate any help.
