Armagh / 1830s RC baptisms - illegitimate children
« on: Thursday 31 March 22 14:16 BST (UK)  »
I have identified two possible ancestors however their baptism records are puzzling me - both were baptised in the same church in the 1830s however in both cases they have been recorded as illegitimate however they have been baptised with their fathers surname and the father has been named.
I've attached one of the examples, the other is Stephen McConnell with father Moses McConnell

Is it unusual for a child to be baptised with the fathers name and also recorded as illegitimate?  Could it be that the parents were a mixed marriage which was not recognised by the Catholic Church so children were recorded as illegitimate?

just curious - thanks

United States of America / Accuracy of death certificates
« on: Thursday 12 February 15 10:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have just received a copy of a death certificate for a woman who I thought was a sister of my grandfather - Mary Ann Fulton Rodeffer who died in Philadelphia in 1924 - all the details fit with what I already know through family stories except the mother listed on the cert, Anna McDowell, is a totally different person to what I expected (I expected Mary Donaldson)

Is it possible that when the death was registered, Mary Ann's husband didn't know the name of his wife's mother and just put something down to fill the space - has anyone come across this happening before?

Any advice much appreciated

Scotland / Samuel Gibson - needle in a haystack
« on: Monday 13 October 14 13:23 BST (UK)  »

Looking for any info on Samuel Gibson born in Scotland c1853.  He married Elizabeth (likely nee Ballentyne Hill/Ballentine Hill) in Carlisle in 1877.

They appear on the 1881 census living in Carlisle with two daughters Mary J and Lillian JH, and by the 1891 census there is no sign of Samuel (it is possible he was regularly working away from home as a hat maker/salesman), but  Elizabeth and the girls plus three sons, John, Henry and David are 'visiting' Thomas Barnfather in Caldewgate, St James (Carlisle) - I think that Thomas Barnfathers wife Margaret had a maiden name of Hill so possibly a sister of Elizabeth Gibson.

I have traced Samuel and Elizabeth and their sons to Dublin, Ireland where they appear on the 1901 census but no sign of the girls.  By the 1911 Dublin census, Samuel is noted as a widower and the three sons are all married and still living in Dublin.  Samuel is listed variously as Presbyterian and Church of Ireland

I'd love to find out more about Samuel and family but its unlikely given the relatively common name and my lack of solid information but hopefully something above will ring a bell with someone....

thanks

Cumberland / Gibson family, Carlisle? area
« on: Thursday 02 October 14 09:10 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any info on Samuel and Elizabeth Gibson and family c1870-1900.
Samuel was born in Scotland c1853.  He married Elizabeth (likely nee Ballentyne Hill, but possibly McDonald) in Carlisle in 1877.

They then appear on the 1881 census living in Cross Canonby with Maryport with their two daughters Mary J and Lillian JH, and in the 1891 census Elizabeth and the girls plus three sons, John (John is the direct line I am researching), Henry and David are 'visiting' Thomas Barnfather in Caldewgate, St James - no sign of Samuel but it is possible Samuel was regularly working away from home as a hat salesman. I have traced Samuel and Elizabeth and their sons to Dublin, Ireland where they appear on the 1901 census but no sign of the girls.  By the 1911 Dublin census, Elizabeth has died as Samuel is noted as a widower and the three sons are all married and also living in Dublin.

I'd love to find out more about Samuel and Elizabeth and also I haven't been able to trace what happened to Lillian or Mary so any help welcome

thanks

It looks like Ballyanan to me - which is a townland in County Cork

Not sure if you've seen this - it may even be an old post of yours - but there's a post on the www.oldwarrenpointforum.com which may be of interest

http://www.oldwarrenpointforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2705

If the link doesn't work just do a google search for michael o'hare + elizabeth mcvey + newry and it should come up on the first page of returns

Good luck with the search

Armagh / Re: Castle Dillon?
« on: Tuesday 19 August 14 09:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi HL

I too have been researching McConnells from Armagh - but from the south of the county so likely no connection to yours - I have hit a brick wall in the mid 1800s so you never know!

Anyway in research I came across documents in PRONI (I haven't viewed them) which relate to a Moses McConnell Co Armagh and his friendship with General Molyneaux in the 1790s - not sure if this General Molyneaux was connected to the family at Castle Dillon but might be worth a look if anyone you know is going to PRONI

Good luck in the search
