Thank you for the information

Hello Joy, I have just come around in a huge circle!  Your Alfred G Long  I have today discovered was the younger brother of my gg grandfather Robert.  (parents Alfred & Rhoda)  Roberts son (my g grandfather) is Walter Seymour Long (b 1882).  He was a police officer in South Africa!  His daughter was Elizabeth Joan (born 1915 whose mother was Adams we think)

We are just looking at some information online about the family.

I do hope you see this message

thank you Jack. I have only just found out that most early census records for Ireland were burnt or destroyed.  Peter Mack appears on the UK 1841 census as a soldier aged 20, so I think I will have a problem finding his family.  But following your link, I have just found some Macks on the 1901 census in Rathaspick Queens the next town/area to Strathbally. These include a 74year old Ellen Mack who could I suppose be a sister in law.

My ancestor Peter Mack was born abt 1822 in Ireland (uk census 1841-1861)and was in the British Army.  I have just discovered looking at British Army Service Records that he may have been the only Irish soldier called Peter Mack born that year, place of birth was given as Stradbelly Queens.Does anyone have any ideas if I could get any further with this? Thanks
