London and Middlesex / Re: Norman Faulkner Bent
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 05:18 BST (UK)  »
Norman had 2 sons older than Frank Cyril - Norman Frederick bc.1886 and Harold bc.1890.

Norman Frederick married a Rosalie Clement Martin 1910 Birkenhead and a son Norman Hector born 1910 - in April 1910 Norman Frederick went to Sydney, NSW, Australia followed by wife and son in 1916 where a dau. born 1918 and another son Henry Arthur Reginald b.1920.  So, 2 grandsons of Norman Faulkner were in NSW and any descendents of these 2 are to be found in Australia.

Harold married an Ethel Ann Hunt in 1915 and they had 3 daughters and 2 sons - Stephen F. 1917-2001 (who in turn married 1945 and had a daughter 1951 and a son 1954 in Northallerton, Yorks - names easily found on Birth Index - cannot name as still living) and a John W.born 1925 (can find nothing on him other than birth entry).

The son born 1954 married in Durham in 1979 - 2 sons and a daughter.   This family living in Durham on current UK census.

So, there are indeed a few male descendents of Norman Faulkner Bent around in England and Australia.

Hello Annette, I have just read your post and I realise it is some time since you posted but I have only recently returned to my research into the Bent family.
I am a granddaughter of Norman Frederick. His daughter Esme was my mother. She passed away 4 years ago.
There are a few of us here in Australia descended from the line of Norman Faulkner and Emily Bent.
My brother and I are, of course, no longer 'Bents' as our mother became 'Howarth'.
Norman Frederick did indeed also have 2 sons - Norman Hector (who was born in Birkenhead before his mother, Rosalie, joined Norman in Sydney). They had a son, Michael (still living) and a daughter Rosalie (who was from a second marriage) and also still living. The younger son, Arthur, had one daughter and 2 sons - all still living.
Both Norman Hector and Arthur are deceased (Arthur was killed in the Granville train accident in Sydney in 1977). I would be happy to supply any further information.
Regards, Rosalie (yes another one!)

To J. Any further information you can supply on the 1/11th and the ships that carried them to Sydney would be very much appreciated.

Hi there,
I know John Howarth did not die in 1862. The John Howarth I am interested in is, I think my great great grandfather who married Eliza Walsh in Sydney in 1851 and were the parents of my great grandmother, Sarah Howarth, who never married but gave birth to my grandfather William George illegitimately. John and Eliza had other children, one of them being Shepherd and in some instances he seems to be known as John Shepherd. I'm wondering if that is he in the redcoats listing. I am still confused about the identity of John who married Eliza.

Yes Fay, I had noticed that too when checking the Redcoats info although I found it strange that John's father's name was John Shephard Howarth and there is a Shephard Howarth mentioned. I wonder if that could be a brother of John. Anyway, at this point I am just glad to have identified John and Eliza. I have been to NSW bdm and find John died  in 1862 - a year after his second child was born. No record of Eliza's death - so far.  All this research can be frustrating at times but it's hard to let it go isn't it?

Fay, you wonderful person!! I have used Ancestry in the past but found it was using up too many of my dollars. You don't know how exciting this is because John and Eliza's eldest daughter, Sarah, gave birth to my paternal grandfather illegitimately in 1879 and it has been so hard to trace beyond Sarah until I got her death certificate and found the names of her parents - John and Eliza (Sarah retained Howarth). My dad, who is no longer living, always said he didn't know about his father's family and I now know why he wouldn't devulge that information (a terrible scandal in those days).
I am so happy to be able to identify John, my great, great grandfather and yes, you are right, the Eliza who came out to NSW as a convict in 1832 would certainly have been past childbearing age if married in 1851. And how amazing that we have relatives who served in the same regiment.
I will now do some more searching and go to the link you supplied.
Thank you so very, very much.

Thank you so much Fay. My interest is in John Howarth and Eliza Walsh. I have a copy of their marriage certificate and the witnesses at the marriage were John and Rachel Wilson. The marriage took place in the Wesleyan chapel in 1851 in Sydney. I am trying to ascertain if Eliza was a convict and thought that may be the case when I see her signature is marked with an X, as is Rachel's. Was the "Palmyra" a convict ship? Eliza and John, I think, are my great, great grandparents. I am very glad to have made contact with you.
Regards,
Rosalie Busch (nee Howarth)

I am researching Eliza Howarth (nee Walsh) who, I think was an Irish convict and transported to NSW. I have her marriage details and I see the witnesses at her wedding in 1851 in Sydney in the Wesleyan church (Princes Street Chapel) were Rachel and John Wilson. I would love to know if you would have any more details of the Wilsons which may enable me to trace Eliza. She could be my great, great grandmother.
Thanks, Rosalie Busch
